With a 458 Lott I know I can shoot 458 Winchester ammo. How about the 458x2? Are there any ills to the chamber in doing this? I can get some free 458x2 brass if it's OK.

I wouldn't.

And yes, the ill's are it burns the chamber in front of the case and before the throat and if done over a long period of time, when you then fire longer cases they can expand into the extra space and make extraction hard.

It happened with 500 x 3" and 3 1/4" BP guns.

It's like shooting .22 shorts in a .22 long
rifle chamber. No problem for the occasional shot, but regular use will ruin the chamber.

I would try downloading a WM 458 before I would try a 458 x 2 inch. It seems like you would get a lot of chamber wear with that short of a cartridge. Just my 2 cents. Wink

I would like to know if 458 Lott guns that have had A LOT of 458 WM ammo fired in them have had the chambers affected. And I mean a lot.

The difference in case length MAY be a bit short to burn the chamber but in 500 x 3", it's not too short.

Anyway, know for sure ?

James Watts, when he invented the .450 Watts in the late 1940s made shorter versions to avoid the serious recoil. He made a 2.4" and a 2" as well and shot them all out of his original .450 Watts rifle. The 2" round died away but the 2.4" became the .458 Winchester. It was very interesting knowing James and documenting his work in a book I wrote on his life. He was a great man but many took his ideas and ran with them and, subsequently, got credit.
Cheers,
Cal

I would like a copy of that book. Is it possible you know where to get one? I checked briefly you web and with Abe's but no listing. If you could send me the ISBN number I can continue to look but would rather have one you might --- PRETTY PLEASE--- sign.
Thank you,
Frank
