Hi everybody, I've got some questions about a rifle that I bought a couple months ago. The rifle is a Heym SR20G in 375 H&H that I bought off Gunbroker.

I haven't shot it a whole lot yet, but I have shot it enough to know it fits me well is fairly accurate (at least with the irons).

In the next two months or so, I'm planning on sending it in to have some work done. The rifle came with claw-mount bases installed, but no rings or scope, so I'll be buying a scope and having the rings made, but I'd also like to have the safety and feeding checked. I haven't had any problems, but I'd like to have it checked out before I hunt with it.

I'd also like to have a new recoil pad installed (the one that's on there is kind of hard). I may also do something with the sights because the front bead is tough to see.

I'm already planning taking the muzzle brake off using either a thread protector or a hacksaw.

I posted pics in the lefties forum after I got it, but I got a new camera since then and finally had a chance to play with it today.

Sorry for the long post, but I'd like to be able to send it to one shop if possible.

Is there anybody that you would recommend to do the work? Is there any other work that you would consider having done at the same time?

Thanks for the advice.

drop new_guy a PM ( hyemusa.com) & get his input

NECG/EAW has claw mt rings
(and others also make them)

Also these two:

I'd have a threaded cap made and save barrel length from the hacksaw.

NECG do this kind of thing, up in New Hampshire.

I mean claw mounts, Recknagel sights, recoil pads, etc.

Not inexpensive, but then you would know that.

Feeding and function? Just shoot it fast and furious from the shoulder. Lots and lots.

That's the only way to test it and you can do it as well as any gunsmith.

It looks like the receiver is already drilled for 'regular' bases; why not remove the claw mount bases entirely?

I believe George is right... if there's screw hole under the rear base, you can replace.

If not, I'd send to NECG and have them fit rings

Thanks for the input everybody. I've been looking at the EAW Quick-loc mounts that NECG has on their site. Ideally I'd like to have two different scopes for this gun, and with the quick-locs it looks like it would be easier (and cheaper) to add a second scope later on, and they don't have the objective bell restrictions that the claws have.

Maybe a conversion like this, but swapping the rear bases instead of adding on to the claw rear.

NECG also has a peep sight listed that fits the quick-loc rear base.

There's a gunmaker in Medford named Reto Buehler who seems very competant with the type of work you mention. He's a custom gunmaker guild member. www.customsportingarms.com, I believe.

That Muzzel break undoubtably screws off. looks like some type of barrel harmonic tuner. Probably added for accuracy issues. May be left hand threaded though.Would also bet there are screws holding the rear base in place.-Rob

The brake is huge, but it threads off. I knew when I bought it that it was going to come off. It sure is effective though.

PNWHunter, I have never liked the looks of the EAW mounts. It's an aesthetic thing - to me they seem too complicated. (In comparison with my favorites, which are Talleys.)

But for this application, they may be just what the doctor ordered.

As for the muzzle brake, you can get your gunsmith to make a threaded cap to replace it for field use.

But I would definitely keep the brake for shooting from the bench. As you probably know, it makes a .375 feel like a .308.

Have cap threaded for the muzzle. I had a threaded lyman brake on my 300 Apex. I had a cap made it it looks great. No need to cut any of the barrel. Keep the claw mounts. Go have fun!

You could have someone turn down that brake and then trim it way short for a thread cap.

I have been very happy with the work of Gary Stiles.

http://glstiles.com/

He can do all the work you mention above and at a fair price. I have worked with many gunsmiths on various projects over the years and Gary is one of the best. His communication is great and his turnaround time is reasonable. Gary will actually call you and give you updates on your project! He has always finished work for me on time and on budget.

If you don’t mind spending the money on claw rings, I think they are the way to go. They are some of the best quick release scope mounts made. I don’t know what the cost will be to have a set of rings made but a phone call will answer that question.

I also recommend considering a leather covered recoil pad. Gary did one for my Chapuis double and I am very happy with it. They look great and are very functional on a dangerous game rifle. They don’t snag on your shirt like a rubber pad can sometimes do.

Good luck with your project regardless of who you choose to do the work.

We're going to be "gifted" with a health care plan we are forced to purchase and fined if we don't, Which purportedly covers at least ten million more people, without adding a single new doctor, but provides for 16,000 new IRS agents, written by a committee whose chairman says he doesn't understand it, passed by a Congress that didn't read it but exempted themselves from it, and signed by a President, with funding administered by a treasury chief who didn't pay his taxes, for which we'll be taxed for four years before any benefits take effect, by a government which has already bankrupted Social Security and Medicare, all to be overseen by a surgeon general who is obese, and financed by a country that's broke!!!!!
