Used to call my 338/378 WBY "The Dragon Slayer". No dragons left in Alaska so it must have been a good name.

Biff,
You are Thor when you wield the hammer, so you ought to name the rifle after the hammer of Thor.

There are two choices that I know of:

Uru
***
This was the Marvel comic book name for the hammer of Thor. I use it for my featherweight 375 H&H that weighs about 6.75 pounds with reciever sight.

Mjollnir (pronounced sort of like "Mule Near")
********
This is from the Icelandic Sagas that preserved the Norse mythology through the Dark Ages. I have seen it also spelled as "Mjolnir" with or without the oomla or two dots over the "o" in either spelling form. Can some Scandinavian type it correctly? Somebuddy who know?
I call my 460 Wby BBK-02 with lightning bolt checkering pattern on the forearm "Mjollnir."

Some other pet names:

My 510 JAB/500 A2 is called "Jabba the Hitt."

My 416 Rigby rifles are:

Eleanor Rigby (original, not)
Lady Elaine
Elvira

My 470 Merkel "double": BangBangThang

If it ain't the Hammer of Thor, it ought to be female, IMHO.

Damn, I knew when I posted that I was wrong.
Uru is the metal the hammer is made out of.

You have the correct name of the hammer, but Thor is a better name for a rifle. It's hard to pronounce Thor's hammer's name, and, no one, except a few, would get it anyway.

On the otherhand, it's a great way to start a conversation, if you engraved that on the rifle.

Biff and Socrates,
Good points, made. "Jabba The Hitt" just got its name changed to "Thor."

Actually I do have "Mjollnir" stamped on the barrel of the 460 Weatherby, and a lightning bolt checkering pattern on the forearm.

BTW, along these lines, Odin, father of Thor, had two ravens, Hugin and Munin, that sat on his shoulder and would go out to reconnoiter the whole world daily and report to Odin.

Odin also had two wolves that sat at his heels, Geri and Freki. I have named a 257 Weatherby "Freki." Yep, stamped it on the barrel in a silly moment.

The spear of Odin was "Gungnir." He is pictured sitting on his throne holding the spear. It determined victory in battle by the direction it flew over the battlefield: SHOT PLACEMENT by Odin.

My 416 Taylor just got named "Gungnir." This will have to be finely engraved if it goes on the barrel, no stamping for Gungnir, after all, it is one of those high class Ruger 77 Mark II stainless actions with a Timney trigger, stainless steel floor plate, Shilen stainless 26" barrel with Dakota sights, a barrel band sling base, and the new synthetic Ruger factory stock (nice and light). The boat paddle and Hogue stock have been swapped out.

Hittem in the right spot with Gungnir, the other "G-spot," and they are quickly done in, any game on earth. Shot placement by Odin. Just some loose associations. [Big Grin]

Then there is "Valkyrie" the chosers of the dead, great name for a murdercycle/motorcycle.

Yep, I like Norse mythic names for rifles, or female names of any sort for my beauties.

Another great term lest we forget, "anschuss" which means the spot on the ground where the animal was standing (and possibly dropped dead, or at least left blood) when the bullet hit (German?). One could name a rifle "Anschuss" and call it "Annie" for short. Lest we forget.

BangBangThang goes by "BB" for short.

Hi DaggaRon, the name of Thors hammer is Mjlner, I repeat Mjolner with two little dots over the O.

This perticular hammer can not be broken, it will smash anything or anyone that comes in its way when Thor has released him,its a him.

I have a .308 Sako Varmint that I have named "fredsbevararen" ie Peacekeeper and a M98 in 9,3*62 that I call the reaper, cause it will harvest anything that i might hit with it.

Christian,
Thanks for the Swedish input. I am not smart enough to know how to type the "o" with the dots over it.

Is this spelling of "Mjolner" the Swedish variation or is it universal throughout Scandinavia?

Still looks close enough to "Mule-Near" for a rifle that kicks like a mule. [Smile]

Have a look at this thread...

http://www.serveroptions.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=16;t=001975

458 AI turns a Win mag into a real thumper.

It comes down to a near straight case, 375, 416, or 450 Lott, and, it gets more velocity then the Lott.

Depending upon what kind of 458 you have, it maybe as easy as just reboring the chamber.

What's really cool, is you can still, in a pinch, fire 458 win mag, 450 Lott ammo, and 458 AI.

Couple companies make Lott ammo, at a reasonable price, so you could take the lott ammo, fire it, get the gigles out of those rounds, and have cases formed for the AI.
The 450 Lott is nothing to sneeze at, and the AI is just a little better, usually, out of a 24 inch barrel, giving you a real world, magic number, 2400 fps, 500 grain 458 bullet.

I ran into the guy that designed the 50 Capstick, and he gave me the run down on the 458 AIM, and that he was COMPLETELY jazzed with it, since he could download it, and fire all kinds of different ammo in it.

I like it, because if I can find a CZ 458, with a 25" barrel, I don't even have to rebarrel, and I have a REAL dgr rifle.

American spelling of Thor's Hammer:
wielded the hammer Moljnir

Biff, glad I could be of service. I kind of wanted something heavier then a 375, but, much over 458 becomes WAY to expensive for brass, bullets, etc.

However, the 458 just didn't do it for me. I know this sounds weird, but everybody here seems to think 2400 fps is the magic number, and I like rounds where I can load up, and load down.

On the otherhand, I don't like the idea of ending up with the rifle at one place, and no ammo, so the 450Ackley sounds perfect. You can use 458 win in a pinch, and Lott, and AI.

Thanks to Mr. Capstick for the info.

There must be something in the names from Norse mythology. I name a couple of rifles with that theme as well.

Does anyone know the name of Odin's spear?

The spear that could never miss? Sounds like my rifle. [Big Grin]

Was it Sleipnir or was that Odin's horse?

My 375 is named "Stormbringer" after the black sword of Elric the Albino dwarf, a warrior of chaos. In novels by Michale Moorcock. tormbringer drank the souls of the men it killed, and when Elric died, Stormbringer spoke to him and said "I was a thousand times more evil than you".

John,
Gungnir is the spear of Odin, also my 416 Taylor. "Shot placement by Odin."

Hugin and Munin were his ravens, Freki and Geri were his wolves. From _Bullfinch's Mythology_ IIRC.

Mjolnir with the oomla seems to be the most common spelling for Thor's hammer in English text.

Sleipnir? I dunno, but if you say it was Odin's horse, I will certainly take note.

But honest it really was an accident !!!! gabe

HA! Yo Biff, is this the rifle we are supposed to be throwing out names for? That's a good one too. I had my wife read your post, she laughed pretty hard and said "MEN"! I guess that sez it all huh?

P.S. After the first firing of my newly acquired .500 A-Sq I named it Mulut'uuk which always gets a laugh from the Yup'ik speakers. It means "The Hammer".

John,
I checked a book called _Viking & Norse Mythology_, by H.R. Eliis Davidson. This was my source for "Gungnir," Odin's spear. His spelling for Thor's hammer is "Mjollnir" with no oomla.

Davidson does indeed show "Sleipnir" as the Horse of Odin. Sleipnir had eight legs and carried Odin through the air to the land of the dead. Odin also bore the dead back to his realm on Sleipnir.

The raven and wolf names were from Bullfinch. "Hugin and Munin" mean "thought and memory," the ravens of Odin. Freki and Geri, the wolves of Odin, I do not know a meaning for.

Here's an interesting tidbit: "Draupnir" was the self-perpetuting gold ring of Odin, this according to Davidson. Every ninth night nine new gold rings dropped from it. "As a leader in battle, Odin was naturally viewed as a ring-giver, dealing out treasure in the form of gold rings to his followers." Dedicated warriors wore these rings like collars, and required no other defensive armor because of the protection of the golden ring. [Eek!]

Sounds like Leupold to me. I have a Leupold on Gungnir. [Smile]

Odin was also known as "Alfdaur" or "All Father." Alf for short? [Smile]

Any other names from Norse mythology would be appreciated, animals, weapons, artifacts, tools, monsters, heroes, etc. of the myths? Sumbuddy who know? Please give source if known, or what language if from the native tongue of y'all Scandinavians.

Marvel comic books don't rate highly in authority.
