Hey all, first post, though I have been reading posts for awhile. I recently picked up a Steyr with sbs action, it is in .376 steyr. This is my first big bore rifle. My biggest prior was a 8mm Rem. Mag. My question is how is is rifle rated? or I guess how good is this action? It is my first experence with this make. Would it be a good choice for plains game. Thanks

I've got a Styer Scout in .308 with the SBS system. It is glass smooth and shoots very well. It'd be a fine choice for Plains Game. You'll find varying opinon on these rifles but they are accurate and smooth. I hate to admitt it but i rather like the way they handle and shoot. I've played with the .376 a bit and I really like the round! And congratulations on your first big bore.

Plastic and stainless steel are not a part of my life, in fact they invade the decency of my world...I never will pack a rifle or shotgun that is made out of the same stuff my wifes toaster or car grill is made of My life is old world walnut, rust blued rifles and shotguns, iron sights and double rifles and low powered scopes.. But to each his own and its all in fun when I get down on my friends and neighbors about the modern arms they carry... I've got a Steyr Pro Hunter in 376. Accurate, and the recoil isn't bad at all. It is a fine all around rifle. lawndart

It'll do fine on all plains game, but is more than you need for most. I call my .376 Steyr Scout my "African Scout" as it is a good candidate for a general purpose African rifle in the same class as rifles in 9.3x62. I took it to Africa in 2002, loaded with 300-grain Woodleigh Protected Point handloads at 2320 fps. It cleanly killed a nyala, waterbuck, bushbuck, and eland with one shot each. I have no doubt it would kill the larger, tougher plains game like wildebeest, gemsbok, and zebra very efficiently, while not tearing up the smaller ones. --- Eric Ching "The pen is mightier than the sword...except in a swordfight."

You got a fine rifle there. Very accurate, excellent trigger, and a versatile cartridge thats easy to reload and components are fairly inexpensive. I use Varget for all my loads from 225 grn Hornady SP deer loads, to 300 grain Partitions. Mine is going to RSA in july for plains game. A few of the posters here have done well in Africa with the .376 Use the search feature on this site for load info and hunting reports from folks like HunterJim, Slingster, Jeffeosso etc. Don't pay no nevermind to Ray. He just hates plastic. But I do believe that deep under that crusty exterior, he secretly admires the cartridge WARNING....INFLAMATORY STATEMENT BELOW!!!!! You won't find a better factory rifle than a .376 Steyr Prohunter without spending three times much money as I paid for mine. Elmo

Elmo Would it not suffice for mbogo also in the prohunter if using proper loads?

In my opinion, it should do as well as a 9.3x62, which has a long well-earned history of killing Cape buffalo, or the rimmed .375 of yore. In fact, I developed my 300-grain load for that purpose, but a .470 Merkel fell my way just before the hunt and I switched gears at the last minute. It's definitely not a charge-stopper, but a carefully placed .375/300 at 2300 fps can definitely kill buff. It would be nice to have a bit more velocity (2450 fps would be ideal), and to that end I've been encouraging Steyr-Mannlicher to bring out the .376 Steyr in its standard ProHunter (60cm/23.6" barrel). That should easily reach 2450 fps, as Jeffeosso has amply demonstrated with a rebarreled M98 Mauser. I just acquired a Husqvarna pre-war M98 in 9.3x57 with a 24" barrel that I'm going to have rebored and rechambered to .376 Steyr in order to test the proposition myself. --- Eric Ching "The pen is mightier than the sword...except in a swordfight."

I have a Steyr SBS Prohunter chambered in 308 win. It is very accurate. It loves Hornady's 150 btsp and IMR 3031. As far as the 376 I like the what I have ben hearing about the round but I have no expierence with it. I hope to change that soon

Thanks all for quick response. It is the first gun I have shot with the forward mounted scope, the low power and heavy recticle is very quick to pick up. I have a leupold 3x9 compact that might be good for longer shots. Practicaly speaking how far is the 2.5 good for? Surestrike you are right the action is very smooth.

My preference on game is to limit myself to point blank range, so I doubt I'll take a shot at more than 250 yards in the field. My longest shot on game to date was taken with a 9.3x62 launching 286-grain bullets, which is ballistically similar to the .376 Steyr. I had the scope set at 3X and the shot was somewhat over 200 yards on an impala; dropped it in its tracks. That should be as much range as one needs in this chambering. --- Eric Ching "The pen is mightier than the sword...except in a swordfight."

David, Although custom made Pre 64 Winchesters are my favored toys. I own 3 Steyr’s SBS Prohunter mountain rifles chambered in .308 – .270 - .3006. Engineering, accuracy and quality are second to none. I am very pleased, the all work flawless, as an out of the box product, hard to beat. Congratulations, Roland

Ray, don't you just hate it when the world intrudes? Since you hate stainless so much, i'll guess you can just sendme your searcy, as those actions are stainless. on the 376 with a long enough barrel (mine's 25) you can break 2500 fps with 300 grains... and runing more pressure than a 375 hh... but you are right there with it's classic load. with light barnes X bullets, i think it's perfect jeffe opinions vary band of bubbas and STC hunting Club Information on Ammoguide about the416AR, 458AR, 470AR, 500AR What is an AR round? I agree with everything said about the 376 but if I also had an 8 Mag (handloaded) it is what I would take first for plains game; the 376 maybe as the second rifle. "Experience" is the only class you take where the exam comes before the lesson.
