Yes, I'll be interested too as there seems to be several variations, chambers, bore diameters, etc., before I embark upon an expensive 404 project. NRA Life Member, Band of Bubbas Charter Member, PGCA, DRSS. Shoot & hunt with vintage classics.

I have the pessure testing equipment, and can have it calibrated with the equipment at a major US manufacturer. I also have a minimum spec 404 reamer. I don't have a test barrel. If anyone has an old barrel that I could turn back, rechamber and fit to my test action I would be happy to measure some "modern loads". It should be possible to increase velocities over the traditional ones and stay below the CIP specs with some of the newer powders (all of which I have on the shelf). lawndart http://www.huntingtons.com/ for brass, bullets and dies.

Alf Looks like you have got info a plenty on sources for components. If you wished for any original nomenclature on the history or origin of the .404 including all modifications undertaken on the round then drop David little a line at Kynamco (Kynoch ammunition in the U.K.). David has in his possession all the original Eley/Kynoch cartridge drawings and blue prints and presently offers new manufactured Kynoch ammo. This will provide you with the definitive information you require

Alf Looks like you have certainly done your homework. I suugested David as he is a friend and I am aware of the records he keeps. Another source for information, and one I am sure you have thought out is via the cartridge collectors associations. I am aware that in the US there is the International Ammunition Association (or similar, apologies if I have got the title incorrect.) Here in the U.K we have the ECRA (European Cartridge Research Association) they have a web site and a message could be posted, possibly to a Tony Williams, he has a great knowledge base and either himself or via a know contact could provide further info you may not yet possess. Good luck with the project, if you ever do a similar one on the .600 .N.E please let me know. Regards Jonathan
