Boy am I haveing some fun with this old horse..I can duplicate a 404 and then some..I found out that original loadings got over 2200 FPS with 347 gr. bullets but at 36,000 PSI...

Handloading can really make this old dog run..I am now getting 2300 FPS with a 400 gr. Woodleigh and thats right there with my using, proven load for my 404 and I got a lot of these little pigs in the pen to back me up, meaning rounds in the magazine for the uninitiated...

A 350 gr. or 380 grs bullet at 2400 plus a bit is a dandy load with a monolithic flat nose solid, Bridger and GS custom or Northfork.....

10.75 is .423 the same as a 404 Jefferys so bullets are in abundance. Horneber makes brass and can be had from Huntingtons who are getting a new shipment in soon....

Nice thing is you can very easily make a 10.75x68 on any standard action and put 4 or 5 down with no trouble at all...

I have found IMR-4198 to be the best powder with WW-748, and H335 to be very good powders and will get top velocity without a lot of pressure...I intend to wring this round out and see how far it will go before I have to back off....as very little loading data is available, but I can see the potential is there...

With a properly constructed bullet it is equal to a 404 Jefferys however the 404 can be loaded to beyond the 10.75x68s capabilities, but few do that as 2300 FPS with a 400 gr. bullet is a proven load on anything that walks this planet..

I just received a Hatari Times magazine from RCG who posts here and that issue features the 10x75x68, articles by Harold Wolfe, what neat articles it has, including his building the rifle and then using it on buffalo, all good stuff, thanks RCG (AR poster)

A chap I know has an original mauser in 10,75x68. It's a model with wood till the end of the barrel. He use it for pigs and maybe he trade it as for him is just an old rifle.
Do you think it's worthwile to "talk" with him?

Lorenzo,
An original Mauser, especially in manlicher form like this one you describe is worth a lot of money today if in good shape, if just usablel it would still surprise you what its worth.....I'd grab that old gun in a heartbeat..If you decide to sell it let me know, I'd like to bid on it.

I'm surprised there isn't more interest in the 10.75x68 by custom rifle builders. It's a real powerhouse that easily fits any standard length Mauser with little alteration.

10.75x73mm Mauser cartridge is the same CIP spec as the .404 Jeffery.

But what is the 10.75x70mm, a rimmed cartridge?

Ray,

Did you buy your 10.75x68 already complete or did you have it built? If you had it built, where did you get your barrel, reamer, reloading dies, etc? How long is the barrel? I've got an 98, 8x57 that is destined one day to be something else.

Thanks

Are you using an aftermarket box?

Karl,
Buy a donkey. COTW lists a 10.75x65Rmm Collath. Fired a 205 grain bullet at unknown velocity, and the case was like a .405 Winchester necked up to .423, straight sided.

They said the 10.75x65Rmm Collath was the biggest of the obscure Collath line of rimmed cartridges developed by a "European" gunsmith named Collath who was "active in the early 1900's." Whatever that means. Sexually active? Pretty obscure otherwise. So maybe it grew another 4 + 1 silly millimeters when Collath got aroused? Or COTW is not the last word in obscure cartridge collecting.

This little search did lead me to look at Ken Howell's book and find the shoulder specs for the 10.75x68mm Mauser:
shoulder semi-angle/angle per side = 27deg57min29sec.
shoulder step per side = 0.0136" Eeker

It is sad to see a man in his declining years slip from .505 Gibbs to .404 Jeffery, then hit rock bottom with a 10.75x68mm Mauser.
It is even sadder to realize that I seem to be moving in the same direction.

I do want a good stiff shoulder on mine cartridges though, no matter how light the bullets get. Wink

So you may as well continue your education and try a 10.75x68 and keep learning from this old man, you will like it once you get past all that tech crap that festers and poisons your intelligence...Wisdom comes with age my baby boomer friend, least you stay in that haze you have fallen back into. homer

Hi Ray,

Good to hear that your havin fun with the 10.75, I have one too, belonged to my grandad, its an m98 British-Grade mauser with express sights and swaged-on barrel bands and its original buffalo horn buttplate with the Mauser logo scribed on it, sadly i live in a country where gun laws are crazy and reloading is not permitted, i'd love to get a set of dies, powder and projectiles and start someday, Roll Eyes but for now i have to keep calling up gun-ghops all over india asking them for ammo, Frowner even if its a box of Kynoch's, since the caliber is obsolete the world over, hand-loading is the only logical choice, but for now like i said...no can do, recently i was lucky enough to come across a box of czech 347 grain soft-points, my dad had picked these up years ago from a dealer here at a "govt. controlled rate" Confused so you were allowed only as many as your license permitted you at any one given time, i think he bought 20 of those for a price that was one-third of the rate they were otherwise being sold for....well it was this factor that made one of my uncles think that there was something fishy bout those rounds... bewilderedso they went out the following evening looking for something to make a hole in an saw a rabbit in a field bout 50 yards away, dad remembers holding under the bunny's chin as he was broadside and squeezed off a shot, at the shot the animal started to jump like crazy, so everyone thought dad had probably nicked the bunny an it had gone into shock....well, after the bouncing stopped these guys went there to find just a strip of skin at the back connecting the two ears and very little sign of a skull!! he'd blown his head off.. thumbclean...so dats one of the few reasons i picked up those rounds...coz they're the freshest of any of the factory ammo available here..if any any at all....i also have a Cogswell & Harrison 375 H&H with a Zeiss 6x42 on german claw mounts, she shoots like a dream and is one of my favorite rifles... Big Grin we bought her coz of the 10.75 ammo problem...dad prefers the .423 anyday...if only we could handload Frowner bawlinganyways....i'll post pics here of the rifles if anyone wants to see em.....hope you have a great time with your .423! beer thumb

z375,
That Czech ammo would have been Sellier & Bellot, I picked up a few boxes when I had my 10.75 many years ago, plus some original Kynoch stuff which in my ignorence I shot off at trees practicing with the rifle! The 10.75 was a beauty of a cartridge and as Ray has discovered, could be loaded to equal the 404 Jeffery, particularly the 404J's original ballistics. I hope one day to build another 10.75 as I just loved mine, and they can be built light without kicking excessively. Also amazes me how much criticism still exists against this round based on what Taylor wrote so many years ago.
Cheers...

Norma made a lot of 10.75x68 cases and ammunition for Kynoch in the 1960.s.

I have had some of those cases that I use to form 9,3x63 cases from.

Ken Stewart in RSA makes a very nice 375grain Hi-Performer bullet for the 10,75x68. I think that he also will make a FMJ in the same weight.

Plus searches reveal occasional obscure websites with rifles for sale in this calibre. One said 10.75 x70R barrello or something.
So I come bearing nothing but further confusion really. Big Grin

No, the 10.75 is its own case and about the only thing that will clean it out conversion wise is a 404 Jefferys and it takes a skilled machinist to do that, its very close...

However the 8x68 necked up to .423 or 416 is one heck of a round, I had one once and it was a nice caliber, but alas its a wildcat and I have no use for wildcats these days, always a decent factory round to duplicate any wildcat, the day of the Wildcatter has come and gone, it only fun and games today...

Could you gimme the list of stuff you use to handload your 10.75, also what load to start with... Smileri have lots of Kynoch, and P.S (headstamped) brass thats Berdan-primed..would definitely need a decapping tool for that too... Roll Eyeshave you tried a 300 grainer for the 10.75? sounds like a light load....but it'd be deadly on pigs and deer over here.. Big Grin

Slingster,
Case head (rim) is .498, base is 495, Shoulder is .480, shoulder is 28 degrees, Outside neck is .453, Oal is 3.189, case is 2.677 long, base to shoulder is 2.100..

Skinner,
that would be an easy conversion and mag capacity would probably be 3 down and 1 in the barrel for 4...Bottom metal and rails might need some work..I would go with a 24 to 26" Lothar Walther barrel with the Holland and Holland pattern.

My favorite loads so far are 58 grs. of IMR-4198 with a 350 gr. Woodleigh or a Bridger flat nose solid...

Also 56 grs of same with a 400 gr. Woodleigh for 2150 FPS

also 74 grs. of WW-748 with a 400 gr. woodleigh for 2210 FPS

All with Horneber brass and Fed 215 primers,

I am working on other loads as we speak, since I have a conversion table for AR powders and it looks like Varget is a very good powder.

Just got a supply of 340 gr. .423 bullets from Bill Dowtin, they are Northfork softpoints...I am getting 2550 FPS av. with about the same pressure that I was getting with a Woodleigh 350 gr., now thats cooking...Apparantly the pressure rings are doing their job...

I used 59 grs. of IMR-4198, Horneber cases, Fed 215s...Accuracy is 1.5" on a cold day in Idaho, bet it will do an inch when it warms up and my fingers thaw....

If this load will shoot lengthwise on a Bison for Bill Dowtin in his .404, then its going to do a Cape Buffalo in pretty quick...Now if I can get mike to make a 350 gr. cup point, look out...

I shot and reloaded one brass case 6 times, trimmed and reloaded it 4 more times, and it apparantly is still good?? thats good enough for me...
