I have a 460 gr mold, that I got for my 480 pistol, but was thinking in the back of my mind, would be a fine rifle bullet. First thought was a 45-70 blown straight in a lever gun, but now I'm leaning towards that nostalgic itch that would properly be scratched with a 470 NE on a ruger #1, actually would scratch both the NE itch, and the ruger #1 itch. I figure at 1800 fps, it would be suitable for game, and relatively enjoyable on the shoulder.

Paul I've been shooting a Ruger #1 in 45-70 blown straight to 475. It's built by Gary Reeder and belongs to Kelly Brost of Cast Performance bullets.
I've shot cast bullets from 355-420 grains and it seems to handle each of them well. I've put up to 55 grains of 3031 in them and again, it handles them quite well. It has less recoil than my Marlin 45-70. I'm sure this is due to its straighter stock and pachymar pad (on the #1). We're getting velocities from 1800-2200 fps.
Just thought you might be interested in a similiar concept? Of course, all we have here is basically 45-70 performance. If it was my gun I'd have a 470 NE or 500 built.

Paul, I have a set of .470 NE dies that I picked up for the right price from a friend and I even have a .476" sizer die so am working on the Ruger #1 in .458 WM sitting on the rack for the last year+ at a local dealers. It has had the butt stock severly whacked so it will get a new properly fitting piece of walnut. Now just got to get some more of the projects finished up! Cast bullets have been a part of my shooting now for 14 years so cast loads will definitely be a part of the .470 NE's diet too.
A friend out here in Boise also has a .475 GNR built on the 1895 Marlin and he loves it. I believe it is the engraved one featured on Gary's website.
[QUOTE]Originally posted by Paul H: Hi Paul, I have an LBT paper patch mold for 500 grain .475 bullets. I've loaded and shot these bullets up to 2500 fps and they stand up very well. I'm sure you could load them to whatever velocity you would like. The accuracy seems to be very good also. I make them from wheel weights that are quenched in water from the mold with the back portion getting two full wraps of computer label as a patch and then some LBT blue lube for waterproofing. My buddy is selling his Ruger number 1 chambered for the 470 Mbogo as he wants to build a bolt action repeater. It's the one on my website www.470mbogo.com. He had a murcury recoil reducer installed and it's very clean. If you or anyone else is interested e-mail me and I'll put you in touch with him. 470 Mbogo
I shoot a 480 grain cast bullet from my Searcy 470 NE and it is great fun! I haven't had an opportunity to chronograph the load but it seems accurate enough to about 150 yards. I use 45 grains of XMP5744 and a Fed215M primer. I think the NEI mould was # 357D or something like that. Good hunting.
