What do you think makes up the perfect battery of big bores? To keep it reasonable lets say a maximum of 12 rifles. A switch barrel counts as one for each barrel. It doesn't have to be with DG hunting in mind anything over 9.3.
Similar posts have been done before but I don't think with the Big Bore twist. Just a little bit of fun for the middle of the week.
These do not need to be in you safe, only what you think is an ideal 12 gun set up and why. My picks:
375 H&H A must have will do just about anything.
416 rem The most practical of all the 416s and more rounds in the mag than a Rigby
416 Rigby Classic low pressure get the job done
404 Jeff Another classic that is effective.
458 lott Most versatile of the .458 cals can shoot 458 win in a pinch.
470 Capstick Because PHC was the first one to make me want to go to Africa I’ve got to have his namesake
470NE Double, fast 2 shots with plenty of muscle
470 Mbogo Here begins the stoppers
50 BMG Nothing else hits as hard and as far. Paper punching only
500A2 Great stopper easy to get to feed fits in many actions,
550 mag. Because it’s new and powerful.
600 OK You won't believe how good this one is until you shoot it.

.375 H&H Mag.
.416 Rigby
.458 Lott
.500 A-Square
No gaps to be found. Graduated escalation of power. Nothing bigger than the biggest is needed to stop the determined charge of anything on the planet.
I won't say they're enough, because that's an admission against interest, but they sure are plenty!

The complete big bore cabinet consists of two rifles: .416 Rem Mag. as primary and a .375 back up gun.
I just substituted a .404 Jeff for the .416 in my cabinet.

GeorgeSFor a lefty like me, a .416 Remington and a .470 Capstick would cover the bases (except for long-range paper-punching). I don't consider the .375" a big-bore.

fla3006I like the ones I have: 375, 10.75, 416Rigby, 458Lott, 460, 510Wells. I suppose a double 470 or 500 would be a nice addition. I think the 375 & the Lott cover most bases.

Shoot & hunt with vintage classics.
For me, any 12 of .375 to .510 caliber. After that, the torque and recoil of the "flying rifles" is more than I can deal with unless they are too heavy to be "sporty," or they require a brake, which is a big no-no for hunting.
If I had to limit it to 12 only:
.375 H&H: The Princess of cartridges, and it makes up into a lovely 6.75 pounder on a Pre-64 M70 with a "Brown Pounder" stock.
.375 Wby: Because it is the most versatile "Working Stiff" cartridge in the world.
.375 Lapua: Because it is the most perfectly designed cartridge in the world (and I just got mine today).
.416 Remington: Because it is the readily available progeny of George Hoffman's revitalization of the caliber, and it does what George says was best.
.416 Rigby: Because it is the Prince of cartridges.
.404 Jeffery: Because it is the King of Cartridges.
.458 Lott: The heavy weight side of versatility, another good "Working Stiff" that pairs with the .375 Wby for the ultimately versatile 2-gun battery for walkabout safaris.
.450 Dakota: Because my M98 Magnum is so chambered.
.470 NE: The most practical double rifle cartridge, for doing what double rifles do best, according to the world majority.
.470 Mbogo: Because Mjolnir is so chambered.
.505 Gibbs: Just to add another heavy to balance this 12 gun battery a little better. The Fat Queen of cartridges.
.500 A-Square: The ultimately practical Big-Fifty, and the end of the road for me in sporty rifles, under 11 pounds and no brakes allowed.
For me;
.375 H&H none better or more versatile not quite a big bore)
.458 lott it's just so practical for the .458 cal.
.416 Rigby really even the name has a ring to it
.404 J because I need to justify the awful amount of money I have spent getting one built
.505 Gibbs...practically the end of the road I want a cz so chambered.
.585 Nyati as the stunt gun but it's bordering on being impractical......again I need to justify it
Finally if I could afford it a .500 double of some description.

510 Wells - About my limit for recoil.
50 BMG - Long range plinker.
Double Rifles:
450-400 NE - A true classic.
450 #2 NE - Want one.
500 NE - Why not.
550 Flanged (BP) - Got to have one really large bore using black powder.
That ought to cover it.

I've got the nostalgia angle covered as well as ready for anything
Those I own:
1) 375 H&H adequate all arounder, nil on recoil, a classic.
2) 416 Rigby flexible, classic
3) 45-70 plinker
4) 458 Lott most practical of the 458 caliber in bolt rifle.
5) 470 NE had to have a DR after shooting one for the first time this year and 470 has a great reputation.
My wish list:
1) 405 win. to plink around with
2) 450-400 NE DR
3) 404 Jeffery
4) 450 #2 NE DR or a 450 NE
5) 505 Gibbs or 500 Jeffery
6) 500 NE DR
7) 577 NE DR, I think that would be my stopping point.
But I will keep what I have for now and spend the $$$$ on chasing Cape Buffalo...a passion/addiction I developed last year...I get my next fix in July....45 days or so and counting!!!

404 Jefferys
416 Rem.
375 H&H
10.75x68...thats a little different
470 N.E.
450-400 N.E.
9.3x62 and .338 Win. on the light side, but they have consistently worked for me.
I own one of each of the above except I sold the 9.3x62 and 450-400, but will probably replace them at some point in the near future....
I would hunt the world with any one of the above...and shoot any game encluding elephant with them.

Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue.
What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

and (surprisingly) lastly
a .470 NE double.
Everything else is fun and nice, but beyond the "must have" status.
I completed the middle calibers next ... .338 Win Mag bolt, 9,3x62 bolt, and 9,3x74R double.
Two of the rifles are for nasty weather ... the .338 and the .375.
I kinda like my list ... lots of flexibility. (But I hope my wife doesn't ready this as she may think I've bought the last one!)

http://www.mstarling.com I am pretty happy with my "using" big bore selection right now.
375 H&H: I have three and can't imagine being without one or two. Just a great round that is easy to shoot and is extremely versatile. My pre-64 M70 will be restored to its wood stocked "classic" glory while my M70 SS/Syn is going to get the full treatment suited for a rough and tumble "all weather, beat it up" go to rifle.
416 Rigby: Yeah, the 416 Rem MAY be the more practical choice, but I love the Rigby's old big sexy case. I prefer my RSM to my CZ in this round, but either rifle is a lot of fun and one heck of an instrument.
458 Lott: Currently my favorite big bore round. I don't use it for DG (yet), but for sheer grins for the dollars this cartridge wins out. Cheap brass, bullets and smaller powder charges makes it a winner in the value catagory. Load up full load 500s for grins and lesser rounds for varmints and you just can't be a happier camper.
Upper rounds...
505 Gibbs: Since my 550 Magnum is in limbo I am thinking of a Gibbs. Us big bore nuts need "something" beyond the usual. With modern brass I think the old Gibbs can really be fun! The 500 ASquare is a more practical choice, but the Gibbs just seems to be calling...
