I need some advice. I ran across a couple of Remington 798's in .458 winchester in a local gun shop priced at $800.00. If I bought one I would probably either download it to .404 Jeffery ballistics, or convert it outright to a .404. My main attraction to it was the price.

I have a .375 H&H that I shoot well, and I wonder if maybe I should save my time, and money and stick with the .375 (I'll be keeping it regardless of what I do). What advice do you have?

The 798 isn't long enough for a 404, unless they changed it.

375 H&H and a 458 WM make a heck of a useful combination.

As much as I like Remmington (and I very much do), a 798 isn't a rifle I'd buy. Nice price...but I just didn't like the feel of the 798.

Robert

What's wrong with a CZ 550? I missed a clean Rigby for $800 on the used rack at Cabela's the other day .... Frowner

the cz, for about 900, is a better value --- the fit and finish are far superior, and you won't be out a stock, immediately.

the rem788 make the charles daly version look like Obendorf sporters .. and the mark X before was even nicer. same action, different importer and specifications for finish.

Yes, you can download to 400gr at 2200 ... which is a fun rem 405gr bullet load.

Thanks for the advice Gents, I do appreciate it. I think maybe I'll just save my money for trophy fees and stick with my Model 70 .374H&H.

My real attraction to the 798 was the price, but I wasn't terribly impressed with it, glad I didn't spend any money on it. Thanks for giving me some direction, that's one of the things I like about this forum, all you guys with experience take pity on us newbies and steer us in the right directions.

Good decision. If you have the hankering for a new big bore look at the Ruger M77 Alaskan chambered in .416 Ruger. Wink

SCZ, If you like your 375, but want to up the ante on bigger game like Buff, try the newer 350gr load in the Norma PH series, or load them yourself if you handload.

Biebs,
I've been considering that. It's one of the reasons I'm not going to spend any money on anything heavier until I try the Norma loads and see how they shoot. I haven't tried handloading yet, but with ammo prices I may have to start.

Call Larry at Superior Ammunition, and tell him what rifle you have and that you want to try 350gr bullets in it...you want a "sample pack" He'll make up 4 shells each of 5 different powder types or charges, and color code the bases. When you shoot them, and one type does better than the rest, you call him and tell him you want X boxes of the "red" ones. He looks up what combination that was and you're in business! Good luck, but I think you'll find the 375-350gr load enough for pretty much anything.
