Wait.... since the thread is on the 404, how many 404's do you own, as I recall reading you post of PERSONALLY reloading the 416 rigby, but not the 404....

So, yeah, Dan, I am seeing a pattern here... You preach the 404, but you point out it's flaws... and you HAVE the 416 rigby, that you deselect in public...

Definately seeing a pattern going here.

You give advice on a caliber - yet have no experience building it

You give advice on a caliber - yet you don't own it

You give advice on proper twist -- yet don't own a rifle in that caliber with that over twist

You give advice on penetration - yet don't own the means to test

You write article for gun mags -- yet don't receive payment for them

You give advice on achieving 2350fps in a 458 lott with a 500 gr bullet, and state that the reloader must be defective in not acheiving that -- yet fail to come through with the data or the twist

Is the .425 Westley Richard's rebated rim considered a no no. The WR is shorter than the Jeffery.

I doubt I can add much clarity, but will throw my two cents in.

I built a 404 on a win, bought a CZ in 416 and restocked.

Once I finished the 404 it just didnt blow my dress up, it's a good round, but 416 has many more bullet avail.

CZ's can be done pretty cost effective if thats a concern, can be done quickly by many GS's and once surfaced ground, 3 pos safety and etc make a really nice rifle. CZ's are very easy to do which is worth a lot.

If I was going to use a Mag mauser of some sort I would go 416.

Here is what I would do, I would buy a CZ in 416 and have it slicked up and maybe restocked if time is not an issue.

Then I would build a 404 on an FN mauser go whole hog and be done with it.

Would pretty much covers it the way I see it.

Seriously, I am not bumping this to be a jerk. I would like to know the answers to these questions. It really seems to matter in advice on gunsmithing.. i would REALLY like to be wrong on my assumptions of "none"
