I've been toying with the notion of having a .470 Capstick built. I know I could buy a Lott CZ off the shelf and have basically the same thing. But I don't want an off-the-shelf gun. My question is what would be the best, easiest and most economical way to start?? Remington 798?? CZ550?? Those two seem to be the most readily available donors for a straight re-barrel. I do like the option of the laminated CZ stock. But the Rem is easier on the budget. I've not examined, closely, either action. So I'm coming into this pretty stupid. Opinions?? The Rem 798 is an opened up .30-06 length action. The CZ would allow long loading and use of any bullet available, due to 3.8" box length. 2400 fps with a 500-grainer would be easier at 3.8" length than 3.6" length, whatever the barrel length. It will be crowded with 3-down in the 798 box. With the CZ you will be able to get five down. Use a CZ 550 Magnum or a Winchester M70 Classic. Those are the two best choices of basis for a 470 Capstick. With the CZ you get a 6-shooter using the factory magazine box, 5-down plus one in the chamber.

Another vote for the CZ Many fine custom rifles have been built on that action.

Another way to "skin that cat", get a Ruger RSM in 375H&H, and have it rebored and chambered. Plenty of meat in that barrel. Keith IGNORE YOUR RIGHTS AND THEY'LL GO AWAY!!! ------------------------------------ We Band of Bubbas & STC Hunting Club, The Whomper Club

I built one on a M70 Classic. Formerly a 416 Rem Mag. It was basically a rebarrel job with a little bit of work on the magazine and follower for reliable feeding.

........If you are going to have a big gun it might as well hold alot of bullets , and the CZ 550 Safari Magnum is the action for that ......McGowan can contour a barrel to match the original which means you won,t need a bunch of bolts to hold the sights on ........Even have the sling eye and fore sight base be integral !!!!!!!! .If it can,t be grown , its gotta be mined ....

Pre 64 win M70 action. Have Pac-Nor barrel it and chamber it for you and do the rest yourself. You can always call AHR too. For about the same price they will get you into a .600Ok.-Rob Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large numbers to do incredibly stupid things- AH (1941)- Harry Reid (aka Smeagle) 2012 Nothing Up my sleeves but never without a plan and never ever without a surprise!

Just this once I will play the "ASSUME" game. Assume you do not need the rifle for a couple months. Buy a CZ in 375 H&H or 416 Rem, or even 458 Lott, and send it to one of the companies that bores and re-rifles barrels. They can do the work, retain the original barrel dimensions and just stamp .470/ in front of the original caliber markings. Like .470/416 Rem. Least amount of work, and cost, and you have a brand new rifle in the twist you want. At least from Clearwater/formerly Cliff LaBounty or Norm Johnson with a cut-rifled barrel. This would be soooooo simple, sometimes I amaze myself. Rich DRSS Knowledge not shared is knowledge lost...

Had not thought of that route. About what type of $$ would I be looking at to go the re-bore route?? Thanks to all for the input. Founder....the OTPG

Believe it or not, CZ uses the same ~.670" muzzle diameter at 25" length on all four: .375 H&H .416 Rigby (perfect contour for this) .458 WM .458 Lott Shortening the barrel by lopping off the end will increase muzzle diameter, but I still think this barrel contour is too thin for a 470 Capstick.

Get a CZ550 Medium, Ruger M77mkII, or anything else barreled and perfectly feeding 7rem or 33win or 300win rebarrel to 470AR, with a recoil lug Have a capstick in a normal length action, and mark it 375RUMx470AR and your casehead matches opinions vary band of bubbas and STC hunting Club Information on Ammoguide about the416AR, 458AR, 470AR, 500AR What is an AR round?
