My left handed 458 Lott MRC stainless barreled action appeared today. Barrel is 24 inches and it weighs 6 pounds 1 ounce including bottom metal. After reading some reviews I was almost regretting I ordered it. No regrets now! It is finished as well if not better than any W70 I handled. Safety is smooth and does not bind at all. Bolt cycles smoothly and trigger is ok. Unfortunately I can not fire it yet as my McMillan stock has been on order for 3 months and is not expected for another two. The inside of the action is finished as nicely as the outside.

I agree. The two actions that I have are well made and nicely finished.

George,
.705 - 24 inches long. I would also like to add they drilled and tapped three holes in the rear of the action for scope mounts. This permits you to use the different size bases out there for the model 70's.
Charles, thank you for posting the photos.

Rifle should weigh in at about 9 pounds when finished when loaded. Dang near perfect. 10 pounds if I scope it (which I doubt).

E(vil)Bay generally has model 70 synthetic stocks, long actions, including this one from a 300 win, for about 50 bucks

Would get you shooting!!

Here's even a lam, that with some rasp work and a new pad, might give you 3# of stock and pad
http://cgi.ebay.com/Winchester-Model-70-factory-synthet...QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

On weight, even a dense pad, like a limbsaver or kickese, only weighs about 7 oz, and mcbro's calls fror 20-24 OZ for their stocks... so call it 32oz total, that takes you to a hair over 8 1/2#... which is a fine weight for a good fitting lott. My concern on your weight projection is that you'll be adding lead somewhere.

Snowwolf, Did you have MRC true the and slick up the action for you. I see this is available from them. When you order a barreled actin from them do you have a choice on how it is chambered? I'm thinking of getting one in 404 Jeffery's

I didnt have them do anything special. You can order most any caliber but sometimes you have to stay within a certain contour range. Not sure what you mean by "how it is chambered"?
Check out there web page. It took 15 weeks for my order to be delivered.
Charles, I didnt see those McMillan specials but I can not stick this in a red and black marble, lol.

Barbeque paint! animal Or I am sure they would be happy to paint it for you.

I picked up a black and gray marble to see if it will fit a rifle I have coming in today. If not they will take it back. It would not have been my first choice but the time/money savings is significant.

Snowwolfe,

If your setup shoots anything like the mine, you will be pleased. Got fed up with all the crabby momma bears with kids and for a little nerve tonic for myself, I had MRC build me a SS .450 Ackley, 22" #5 brl, pretty much just like what you've got going. I have a blued M70 in Lott and went with the Ackley for shits & grins.

I put a Boyd's JRS stock on it, double crossbolted and Marine-Tex bedding and it finished at 8lbs 14oz. Despite the blood, sweat, toil, and tears, it cuts cloverleafs at 75 yards with an apeture sight. I must say that 550 Woodleighs at 2150 knock me a little loopy though! I've started playing around with 450gr TSX's for a little more versatility. Sounds like I should try some of North Forks offerings too.

Cheers on the fine choice of working weapon!

Snowwolf I meant throated. Do they throat it for common ammo found for the caliber you want?
I would like to have a 404 J built on their barreled action but noticed their barrels are
.424 not .423 for the 404. I don,t know if that would make a difference shooting .423 bullets in it. It may be better just to buy their action and get a barrel from another place.
I hope you project come out like you want it to. Good luck on a fine rifle.

You should see the BRUISE that my piddly little Ruger RSM Rigby gave me this last weekend. Eeker A friend wanted to get an idea of the recoil, so I let him place his left hand on my right shoulder (his right shoulder is toasted from baseball). Little did I know that he was STRAIGHT ARMING it, so that RSM pushed about 440 lbs, and my arm was in the middle. animal
I should have just stood against a TREE so that he could have watched the leaves rustle!!! lol

Ouch! It would be hilarious though, to watch some big bore nut shooting off a tree just to see the leaves shake! Hilarious, and borderline Darwin Award material that is...

I bought the PAST superultragonzobooyahmagnum for load developement and for about 25 rounds off the bench, I thought I was hell on wheels. But, despite not hurting at the shoulder, the combination of light barrel and high comb kept tapping me on the cheek. So in a fit of wisdom, I drapped my gloves over the cheekpiece and ripped off some more rounds. Since I had to press my face into the stock really hard to get my eye to line up with the apeture sights, every time I pulled the trigger, I would have a moment where everything would black out as my skull accelerated with the stock and my brain remained stationary - wondering what the hell was going on. Only took five shots to figure that one out!

The JRS design is pretty sound, I think, but maybe not the best for a real pounder. My M70 Lott never knocked me out like that so I'm halfway between ordering a Echols Legend from McMillian or buying a laminated blank and copying my M70. It's a big, fat handle, I believe the David Miller design.

PWS,

Get the Echols, and take the time, and $$, to send it to McMillan for finishing (that's what Mr. Echols will recommend anyway) or be prepared to spent some time working on it yourself. I've got it on my .375 H&H and the recoil is really not that bad - though I haven't really spent much time at all at the bench with it.

$900 delivered to my dealer.

Donato, I suggest you call them for throating options. But having a local smith throat it for your specific needs should be inexpensive and easy to have accomplished.

If you use a stock inleted for the Winchester Model 70, how close is it to working for a Montana action?

Oldcoyote,

My experience is limited to one Montana and two M70's. The action screw spacing is the same but the Montana reciever is slightly longer. Bottom metal is slightly different also. I would think they are similar enough that if you are capable of a little carving and epoxy bedding, you could use one for the other. But I'll be the first to admit I'm no expert on the subject.
