Well it is almost done. Mike is busy trying to get ready for the SCI show and completing the 550 Magnum.

What is left is the recoil pad two cross bolts finishing the sites alillte polishing and the bluing. If everything goes as planned I should be shooting monday.

RNS,

I can't see the picture. Everyone is having trouble with Imagestation pictures not working on the new AR. I don't know if its the new software or if Imagestation is blocking Direct Linking.

I'm switching over to Photobucket.

Regards,

Terry

Neal,

That's great news. I am _very_ interested in hearing about the initial range session and your overall impression of the rifle.

Hi Neal,
Your project is looking really good. I'm also curious to hear about the range tests. I wish you the best for your project and great range results.
Take good care,

First the 550 Magnum is basically the 500 A2 necked up to .550" with a 3.00" case.

Next the rifle went to the range today and it proformed better than I had hoped for on the first range test.

106gr of 748 with a 700gr Hawk .035" jacket sp ran 1915 fps. The recoil was very easy to handle. The shock design was perfect no face bumping and the hands stayed away from the bolt and trigger guard.

Next the chrony suffered a fatal wound from a 715gr cast so we went back to the loads with Hawk 700gr sp. We then worked up to 120gr of 748 and 700gr Hawk and looked at quick loads using our 1915 fps load as a starting point and 120gr of 748 should have been close to 2150 fps and 7200 ft/lbs of muzzle energy again with no pressure signs. The 120gr loads were still comfortable to shoot, stiff but comfortable and the gun/stock design was great.

By the way the rifle weighed 11 lbs and when it is 100 % completed with 4 rounds in it the rifle will weigh 12 lbs. The range test today was without a break.

Jeffe and Neal,

While I decided not to complete mine I have remained interested in the progress.

It looks like it is getting close and should ultimately prove to be the best of the real big bangers with the combination of brass and easy rifle conversion and I guess for practical purposes it is as powerful as the bigger ones because of recoil limitations and the fact that good brass is there.

I would not at all be suprised if the 550 could go to higher power levels than the 585 Nyati and especially if Bertram brass is used for the 585.

Neal,

Very nice indeed. Glad the session went so well and especially happy to hear of the recoil level without a brake and at 11 lbs.

Sounds sweet! What action did you build this rifle on? Have you considered selling rides? I'd gladly buy the first ticket. Big Grin

The action is a Cz-550 with a new bolt handle.

Rides will be offered soon. Well anyone that come through the area look me up I need some test dummies for load developement Big Grin.

The loads at 1915 you could shoot with no problem and the loads at 2150 are just about right for the range now we will see if we can make 2300
