Hopefully not dead, but so very far away from what should be needed for a hunter today. The crowd who really need one is of course smaller than the crowd who believe they need one, but still it is not enough to make a parade about. Dan, on your elephant hunting, did you ever wonder if a .458 Lott would not have served as well as your .585 Nyati? Bent Fossdal Reiso 5685 Uggdal Norway

Dan, So, I emailed RNS with your request for information, and perhaps he'll reply to you. Odd, you wrote the mini compendium on big bores, and you know the inventor's email address. Heck, I believe you even have his cell phone number, and I am certain you have his website. Bent, Those that have shot them are amazed at the recoil level.. not that it tears their arm off, but that it's bearable. I did NOT say plesant, as when you touch the trigger on that fat lady, you'll dance, and SHE is going to lead, no doubt. Jeff, RNS invented the cartridge, but that does not mean he knows what everyone is doing with it. A public posting is more likely to generate information about what people are doing with the cartridge than a private email, since the collective knowledge of a forum is generally greater than the knowledge of one person. And I do not know why you wish for so many topics to be taken off line. It seems that you wish to suppress discussion both here and in the gunsmithing forum.

I have not used a 458 Lott on elephant. For whatever it is worth, my experience shooting bullets into elephants has showed the following ballpark max penetration results: .585 nyati, 750 gr, 2250 fps = 3.5 feet .500 NE, 550 gr, 2150 fps = 6 feet .470 capstick, 500 gr, 2350 fps = 5 feet .505 Gibbs, 600 gr. 2250 fps = 4.5 feet 450 Watts, 480 gr 2250 fps = 4.0 feet .375 H&H, 300 gr, 2450 fps = 3 feet Keep in mind that there are numerous variables at work, including bullet shape, bullet weight, bullet density, velocity, anatomy and others.

Dan, Not to be confrontational, but would that not be trying to impose your version of censorship; ie silencing that voice in the wilderness...? All posts here are for public consumption and comment. The way to keep Jeffe out of a post is to not post comments you know will get him rolling in. JMHO, your mileage may vary...as one here has posted. It's not that Jeffe was being rude, IMHO, more likely responding in a defensive manner to a perceived jab at his friend and the project he has invested in heavily in in time and some $$$...which your billing charges at work indicate you do. I do not presume to speak for him, or anyone else here; but I feel somehow connected to the project as well. Simply by being a friend of both gentlemen, and "in" on what is occurring. Neal has a sixty-plus hours a week job and a young daughter who has a budding career as a gymnast he is hauling all over the state of Arizona for competitions every week. Add the reloading components business he is trying to nurture, and some silly notions about spending time with his wife, and the time just gets away from him to be very active here. We all have times in our lives where we are so busy we have to schedule a bowel movement three days ahead to have the time to sit down first. Neal is there right now. You as a litigator should be conversant with the tremendous amount of "lawsuit proofing" that takes place with a new product. It has taken Hornady/Ruger a couple years from concept to shipping carton to get us the 375 Ruger...Neal is doing it in less time with a budget about a hundred thousand dollars less. take care, Rich DRSS

Dan, I do not think Jeffe is intent on causing you any discomfort, a friend read all the posts and suggested to me that you might not entirely trust that the hatchet has been buried. I understand that, it IS said that "...a fool forgives and forgets, and a wise man forgives but never forgets...". Take a fresh lease on life here, and try to not read too much into what is posted. We're not after you man...really, we aren't. This forum is for sharing information and nurturing friendships. Your tag line about the elephant hunt report is very fascinating reading, useful to say the very least and a good read. I keep hoping that you will just take Jeffe with a grain of salt, and continue those spirited debates...on a "don't take it personal" kind of basis. I know you have read the bible once or twice...Christ admonishes us to "hate the sin, but love the sinner...". I am really struggling with that here with one poster, but there is a world of difference between his attitude and the stuff you and Jeffe been at during 2006. You other guys, perhaps Dan was genuinely asking what the status was on the 550. Neal has been busy, and not much of an update has been posted since the SHOT Show timeframe. Cut him just a little slack...hmmmmmmmmmmmm? Rich DRSS

Dan Thanks for asking. No I have not been following it much lately. What I do know is this. CZ wants to build one in the custom shop and offer it as a wildcat. I just need to get everything to them. Ch4d has made/sold 30 sets of dies PacNor has a 1 in 16" and a 1 in 20" twist and has a reamer now to offer chamber barrels because they have had some many requests from Africa for the cartridge. I have sent a pressure barrel, a reamer, 100 cases, 600gr, 700gr and 800gr soft point bullets in .035" and .065" jackets. I have also sent 700gr barnes solids to a ballistic lab for ture chamber psi readings. Next I will be sending cast bullets and a full range of other soft points and FMJ plus the GS bulletsfor testing I answer two or three emails a week where someone is going to build a 585 Nyati until they here about the 550 Magnum and then they decide to build a 550 Magnum basically because of the brass issue and they can get GS bullets in .550 cal locally. Not to stack it up against the other fine wildcats and the fact that it is a new caliber. JGS, Manson, and PTG all make reamers for it. It will be the first wildcat that I know of that a single person has had it pressure tested for true chamber psi reading at a lab and will be added to a reloading manual A second pressure barrel has also be sent to the parrent Company for Vihtavuori powders. That is all I have had time to follow up on lately. RNS RNS

Neal, nice to see you here; seems like you have been away for some time. Hopefully CZ and others will follow through so that this caliber can become more popular. And i would be very interested in hearing about some field results from Africa. The .550 offers and easy and economical way to achieve approximately the same ballistics as a .585 Nyati without the feeding hassles and additional expense. Also, it is nice that there is good Norma brass that can be formed to .550.

Dan, I handled a .550 Magnum that was unfinished a few weeks back. Michael Sherz is the gunsmith on it. I guess he did the gun that was Featured in Kevin Robertson's book. Rifle was nice, and it should look good when finished. The gun was based on a CZ action, I forget who made the barrel but it will have a quarter rib with leaves. I guess Michael Sherz was down in Arizona but has since moved up to Pocatello. If you want his contact info, I can get it to you. Take Care, Mink and Wall Tents don't go together. SB, I am glad to hear that MS is still making .550 rifles. It is really a well-balanced concept, but needs more shooters to support the bullet manufacturers in this diameter.

I think the one thing that is stopping the succes of the .550 Magnum is the .600 OK. The .550, while an exelent constructed cartridge, is just to big for most peoples use in Africa. The guns just gets to heavy, or the recoil to heavy in lighter guns. Too few people need them. And for the ones who must have the biggets one, the .600 is sitting in that chair. And most people who have guns like this built for them, really do not care about the price of reloading components, so the cheep brass for the .550 is really not a subject. And guys - Dan might have his own ways, but how you could make this into that he tries to badmouth the cartrige or its creators, is way out there. Bent Fossdal Reiso 5685 Uggdal Norway
