michael458Thanks Boom! At first glance it looks like you are correct. As always you are looking out for us all! Now let me get back over there and see what I can use in addition to what I already do.

boom stickI liked the Whelen excerpts
"The .250 Savage high-power cartridge has a velocity of 3000 feet per second and uses an 87-grain bullet. Its muzzle energy is 1740 foot pounds. To say that this cartridge is as good, better, or anywhere near as good a killer on big game as the .45-70-500 cartridge with its energy of only 1602 foot pounds is to my mind simply ridiculous"
Seems Whelen used and was OK with the 45-70 and was a "Bigger is better" fan

michael458Oh I would put Whelen in the "Elmer" camp for sure I think. Also must remember in Whelens time that bullets were down right poor to say the least, it did not take much velocity to "out run" bullet design. Today with the enormous amount of premium bullets available that makes the small bores come up a few steps. But in those days to do that one had to go up in bullet diameter and weight to get proper results. I am still in the big bore camp myself. But I will say that some of the small bores with proper bullets are impressive at times!
