Although cross section of a bullet is minute, I am convinced, as are many old time professional hunters, that it does make a difference and one cannot make light of it in decimals...

The bigger the cross section if you can keep the velocity up to about 2000 FPS then the better that gun will kill large heavy animals, I am 100% sure of this, the big dog sleeps on the poarch...

I don't shoot the real big ones for two reasons.
1. they kick too damn hard
2. The 40 cal. kills well enough to suit me.

But I don't kid myself with little jewels of wisdom like there is only .17 difference or whatever...

In my experience, a 404 kills better than a .416, a 458 kills better than both, and a 500 kills better than a 470 and on and on, although all are suitable for large animals..Thats my opinnion, based on a lot of kills and a lot of observations, not one or two buffalo...

I also believe that this therory can be juggled by adding velocity to any of these calibers and the use of monolithic bullets....A .375, 300 gr. monolithic HP bullet at 2900 will kill as well as a 40 caliber at 2400 FPS, but not as well as a 40 caliber with a monolithic at 2900 FPS and so fourth.

Yep, as Ray states the seventeen thousandths of an inch difference in diameter between the Lott and the .475 isn't much........ 3.71% increase to get technical.

B U T !!!! It is FRONTAL AREA that does our work! Better put that puts the SMACK!! into the bigger bore!

When you compare the gain using frontal area as you should; then the gain for the .475 is 10.76%

Almost 11% increase over the .458 is not too shabby IMHO!

George I though we big bore shooters on AR represented the majority of the shooting community Big Grin

No sadly I understand we don't.........................at the gym a couple of years back I had a chap tell me he had just purchased a new cenetrfire and it was a "cannon"in his view..............the rifle was a howa in .243 with simmons scope Confused Fact is this bloke represents the majority of the aussie shooting public at least.
