| I have had the signs of a detached retina. Trailers out the corner of my eye like you see something but it really isn't there. Sometimes it is like shooting stars out the corner of my eye or there is a bug flying around the out the corner of my eye. Runs in the family as Mom and Sister have had this and it was corrected with laser surgery. That's why my 458 WinMag will stay a WinMag and not go to Lott. ------------ Why am I thinking of a 505 gibbs.

| I believe this is quite common with people who don't shoot at all. It's to do with age and eye shrinkage. Mine seemed to re-attach even during occasional .458WM shooting. My optometrist didn't know I shoot, and reckoned it could go either way, anyway. |

| I haven't had any retinal problems, but I am nearsighted, and statistically more prone to retinal detachment due to my oblong eyeballs. No family history of it is in my favor, and I hopefully am not over the hill yet as far as my protoplasm becoming "p-poor." If I had a sudden shower of floaters or flashes of light or any visual field distortions I would get me to an ophthalmologist pronto, call it an emergency, and get it checked out. Eventually I'll have to put brakes on my 50 cals and limit my serious hunting use to "a thinking man's big bore" like the .395. |

| Seeing floaters or spots of light is NOT a detached retina. It is likely a hole or tear in your retina & that is where a detachment normaly starts. These holes can be fixed using a laser proceedure. If you have family history or see many flashes of lights & floaters, have a retinal exam by a good optometrist or better yet an opthemologist (sp). Detahced retinas DO NOT reatach themselves. If you have a partial detahcment, you'll see a blindspot, usually in the bottom of your vision. The blind spot will get bigger until you can't see at all & a fully detached retina IS NOT repaireable. I know, I suffered a partial detachement a few years ago. I had it repaired, I was lucky & caught it in time. My opth. told me shooting by itself won't usually cause it but the more holes/tears you have in the retina, the more likely a hard blow to the head will make the tear big enough to allow fluid to float the retina off the back of the eye. SOmething to be concerned about for sureespecially if you have family history, near sighted &/or a stigmatism. After you hit 50, have a retinal exam at least every two years if you have a history & like to shoot the big guns. You can 't shoot & hunt if you can't see. One of the reasons I got rid of the Lott, it just worried me abit.

| I am nearsighted and have quite a few floaters. During my last visit to the optomitrist I asked about the chances of a detached retina since at the time I was shooting the 458 a lot prior to a safari. He said not to worry about it. Go figure??????????? |

| I have a 460 wby in a cz550 that i have built and shoot the rifle a good bit and i have no sight problems other than i wear glasses. I think wby puts that warning in the box when you buy a markV in 460wby. Could be wrong though.

| This happened to the gunwriter John Wooters. I believe he had to give up shooting big bores as a result.
