Johnnyreb,
FN made a number of those guns for the African trade, they are on std. FN actions openned up to 375 length...The Tanzania game dept still issues those guns to the game scouts.

Schromf,
On the inside of a Mauser box, as opposed to being flat sided the center is cut out so that only the base and the shoulder of the case makes contact on the sides...just look inside any Mauser and it will become apparant what I am referring to..

Thanks Ray,

Makes sense now, I just wasn't picturing the cuts in my head.

I was looking on Wisners website I didn't see any FN parts is the bottom metal you were talking about something they have not listed or discontinued? Or is it Model 70 parts that you were refering to rewoking?

Just off the phone with my smith friend, I am hell bent on this now. Talked with him on the details Ray provided and it makes perfect sense now and the only holdup ( in my head I admit ) is a non issue.

I guess the next the next question is to quarter rib or not, and I will need to sort that out before ordering the barrel.

I was talking with my smith friend and told him what a set of dies runs on the 404, and a chamber reamer was already a known needed, he said we will just cut a set of dies at the same time out of a blank die.

After a long hard day @ work this news makes me happier than a puppy and a big bone.

PS: thanks again Ray that was the detail I needed.

Ray, the rifle that I have is a custom job on a single square bridge magnum action. The 404 rounds almost look small in the magazine well. It holds four down easy, and I can almost fit in a fifth...

Mr. S,
Well you have gone this far, may as well go all the way....

I would order a Lothar Walther barrel on the Holland and Holland contour and have my smith add a 5" copy of the smaller H&H quarter rib that butts into the chamber portion ring of that contour, its absolutly beatifull when done that way...Get a picture of a H&H rifle so that you know what I am talking about...Woody at LW copied my H&H barrel and made it a stock item.

Hey Johnnyreb,
You could rechamber that big action to a 404/416 Rigby and blow washtub size holes in about anything..

Opps there I go again, back into my old wildcat days, gotta quick that, no need....

Ray,

I have read your previous posts on LW and I place a lot of value in been there done that. I haven't downselected barrel choice yet but the only contenders are LW or Krieger.

I bought a Interarms from a fellow board member just recently and settled in my mind that I am going to put together a 9.3x62 on that. I have spoke many times with Woodie, he has spent a lot of time with me answering various questions. Decision was already made that he was going to get my business on one of these barrels, which I haven't decided.

Your information on the H&H profile is appreciated, I will use it whichever bore diameter I decide to order from LW.

What contour do you recommend Ray, I wanted to keep this reasonably light ( under 10 lbs ) and was thinking a min of a #3 or possibly a #4. I am aware LW does contours a little different but I am converting his contours to the Douglas equivilant. What does the H&H profile work out to?

I have pics of the H&H and am very familiar with the profile, its not a scaled pic or drawing so the size is a little fuzzy but I agree it would be a good way to go one this.

The 404 I plan on executing very traditional styling and materials. The 9.3x62 I have some different ideas on, nothing radical mind you but a very rough weather rifle is planned, which will change stock and finish details, form and performance under hard use will dictate some choices.

Ray,

I looked up all my pics of Holland and Hollands, none had the quarter rib. I did like the rib on ALF's 505 though, anything like that?
