I'm thinking of getting my wife one of these rifles, the weight would tame the recoil. I know they are heavy for caliber, those who own one how much do they weigh? "An individual with experience is never at the mercies of an individual with an argument"

great gun, but HEAVY ... the same barrel profile was used for the .458, .416, .375, and .300 (yeah, reallly) though the newer models are slightly lighter than the older ones. i would say more like 10.5 ... but a .375 DOESN"T KICK .. anyone that can shoot a 12 ga for a round of skeet will have no problems with a 8-10# 375, with a little training.. scope bites EXCLUDED opinions vary band of bubbas and STC hunting Club Information on Ammoguide about the416AR, 458AR, 470AR, 500AR What is an AR round? Dirk: I have a RSM in .375 H&H and they are indeed quite heavy. I would guess that mine is ten pounds or so. I think it would be too heavy for your wife unless she is a substantial lass! Here is my suggestion. Take a look at a plain old CZ 550 American in 9.3X62. It weighs in at eight pounds. Put rings and a scope on it and you can bring it in at just under nine pounds. With a 286 Woodleigh protected point or solid, it should so everything the .375 will do and will be a lot easier for her to carry. Dirk, why do you want to get your wife a 375 that weighs more than your 458 Lott? As soon as my daughter started shooting the 375 Ruger Alaskan (with the standard Ruger tupperware stock rather than the Hogue) she wanted it as she likes the short, smooth bolt throw and it's light weight. If you want more weight the original Hogue stock is heavier and comfortable to shoot. I also own an RSM/375HH and it weights 10lbs. w/issue sights. If scope is used, will of course add more, but can say the rifle is very easy to shoot well off hand or even off the bench, which I do not like to do, for the recoil is absorbed if you will by the weight of the rifle. With practice would think your wife could learn to handle the weight and lot depends on your style of hunting, lots of stalking, walking, carrying for long periods of time, etc. may be a deterrent. I do not like a light weight rifle for a host of reasons, but if you equipped the RSM with somewhat wider sling, Cobra style, that would help distribute the weight for more comfort over the shoulder area. Most ladies are weight sensitive and she may well not like the rifle, but other than the weight, one heck of a value available on the market today for the dollar invested. As mentioned by others, recoil is actually not that bad at all with jacket or medium weight shirt.

Take a closer look at ZCZ Remington 798 'Safari' it handles better then my 9,3x62 CZ550 'Medium' Mannlicher. There is no point in mentioning Ruger Magnum or CZ550 Magnum. They are fit for a sasquach.

The RSM .375 H&H shoots great off shooting sticks and from a recoil standpoint would be excellent for a lady. If you handload you can further help the felt recoil. From a stock fit standpoint I doubt any off the shelf .375 would fit well and may require you to look at the custom route or reshape the factory stock.

Jeff, the RSM uses a longer action/heavier barrel than the discontinued Ruger Express (270, 7mm, 300, 30-60, 338, and probably more). The old type (with sling swivel through the foreend) may have been different, but my 375 measures .753" at the muzzle and my 30-06 express .568". The 375 is almost 12lb(!!!) with 5 rounds and a 1.5x6 30mm scope, way too heavy but a joy to shoot, even prone. The -06 is as light as a wand. The RSM in .375 is a fantastic rifle in every way but it's one fault that I would have to point out is it's about 2 pounds heavier than I'd like. As-is with iron sights and loaded with 4 rounds and a leather sling my rifle tips the scale at 10 lbs 3 ounces. With a 1.5x5 Leupold VXIII and 4 rounds in the mag you're talking 11 lbs 2 ounces. At that weight it's a pussycat to shoot though and very pleasant even on the bench for anyone with any centerfire rifle experience. If this is for your wife I'm not sure that weight rifle will be fun for her to tote afield. .22 LR Ruger M77/22 30-06 Ruger M77/MkII .375 H&H Ruger RSM

Dirk.....my RSM in 375 with a 1,5x5 Vari III weighs right at 11#....and that's on a postage scale...so it's pretty close. Compared to ANY of my other African sweeties....it's a pussycat. Gary DRSS NRA Lifer SCI DSC

From the weights everyone is posting here sure makes it sound like a heavy gun. I have a Browning A-Bolt 2 medallion in that caliber and the gun is 7 lbs. without scope. I have learned to shoot this without much problem and I'm not a very heavy guy. Sounds like shooting a heavy gun like the Ruger should be a breeze.

I have not weighed it yet but my new CZ 550 Safari in 375 ain't exactly light, either. I noticed that the recoil was very mild when I fired the first few shots. Landrum

If I was going to buy a .375 H&H from CZ, I think I would get the one with the Euro type stock. I handled a .416 Rigby with that stock at Cabelas one time and it seemed a bunch lighter and handier the the American stock. It's quite a bit slimmer in the foreend. dirklawyer, If that Ruger weights 11 pounds with a scope thats way too heavy, in my view, for a woman to carry and hunt with. Of course heavier guns have less felt recoil. Everything counts on recoil and a soft pad like the new Decelerators are the greatest advance of late. Stock fit, the right scope eye clearance, checkering to hold on to the rifle. Everything counts. In my opinion, and I have two .375's, is that they kick pretty hard. "Weight: 10 lbs" Link Get the 'power' or optic that your eye likes instead of what someone else says. The early Ruger RSMs weighed a good deal more than the new ones...I think the new ones are by far the better rifle and are about the right weight for a .375 or whatever. Ray Atkinson Atkinson Hunting Adventures 10 Ward Lane, Filer, Idaho, 83328 208-731-4120 rayatkinsonhunting@gmail.com
