Making a .376 Steyr on a Ruger m77 new model. My customer wants quick detachable scoperings for his S&B 1,5-6x42. What options are there? Do I have to make from scratch, like milling dovetails and using Talleys?

Warne makes some good ones that fit great. The only problem I have with them is that they are only available in medium and high. Not a real problem on a standard rifle, but on a heavy caliber (I put a set on a Rigby), they are high enough that I find my cheek too loose on the stock for a heavy recoiling rifle. This is on a gun which has perfect fit for me when using the iron sights.

If building a custom where the scope will be used 95% of the time, no problem. Just stock to fit. For a DGR, where you plan on using both sets of sights, you will need some awfully tall iron sights and a good stocking job to make everything fit.

I wish they made these in a low height; they would be my favorite Ruger rings.

Brownells used to sell a set of levers to convert the regular Ruger rings to QD. To me, that is the ideal arrangement, but apparently they didn't sell. They may not be too hard to fabricate.

Go for EAW or Recknagel Mounts and forget the rest. If you need more information or help drop me a private mail.

I like the ruger rings, to tell you the truth. as is, you can remove with a coin, BUT you can pull the thumb nut off and either make or add a lever to those. ruger can tell you the thread size.

My thoughts exactly. I really do hate EAW's, so those are out.
ArtS, have looked at warne, but they no longer make them in 30mm, and as you say, the height is a problem.

Bent,

Since I favor the .376 Steyr, can you provide any other details about making the cartridge operate properly in the Ruger M77?

Besides waiting for the.375 Ruger of course. Wink

Sure, that was a no-pain-operation. Opening boltface, grinding off extractor, polishing all edges inside action - and that was that. Feeds like ice-cubes in an empty glass of scotch.

I would really have loved - loved - this cartridge, if only it had been 4mm longer. As it is, it is the .375Hawk's short, fat twin.
But, surprisingly it loads 4+1 easily, and that is all good. But those missing 4mm can make a grown man cry.

It is great for fast detaching. Very usable.
But, to many moovable parts. .375 is their limit, recoilwise. Almost always to high, unless you have 56mm objectives. Tree times the price of a Leupold QR or QRW, Talleys, Warnes, etc.
As a gunsmith, I hate them. If I had a gun with one fitted on a standard caliber, and it was the right height, I would probably love it.
