I was looking at Chuck Hawks recoil chart, and it seems as if a braked .460 might recoil about the same as an unbraked .416. For those who've shot both, does that sound about right?
|

For me, the 460 had less "felt" recoil.
|
One of Us |
Depends on what 416. Rem and Rigby would be about the same, but Wby and Lazzaroni would exceed that by quite a bit. If I remember, a 460 Wby generates about 105 lbs of recoil in a 10 lb rifle. That must be without a brake. So if the Accubrake brought it down to 60 or so, that would be like a stiff 416 load without a brake.

Yes, I'm talking about the .416 Taylor/Rem/Rigby. The chart has these at 47.8/52.9/58.1 in a 10 pound rifle.

Of course the .460s don't all have the same brake, but the current MK Vs have the Accubrake. They say in their literature that there can be "up to" a 53% recoil reduction. This is why I thought it might be about like the .416s.

My 460 has a brake by Dave Van Horn, http://www.dvhcustomguns.com/ it is about like a 3” mag shotgun. The brake is large but works; it was designed by a guy who worked on the brake for the Apache helicopter gun. I have used it in the safari rifle shoot here in Phoenix where we shoot about 20 rounds. My PH in Africa like the gun very much even with the increased noise to the shooter, he borrowed it to back up other hunters in our group on lion and hippo instead of his 375. Mark

The .460Wea. is very comfortable to shoot and it doesn't need a brake. However in my opiniom it would have to be a helluva brake to cut the recoil by 53%. Pyzda

Pyzda, have you ever shot it WITH the brake? If so, how does it compare to the .416s I listed, unbraked?
|

I thought you ment compared to the 416 wthby. I would say for me, the 460 kicked more then my 416 taylor but less then the 416 wthby.

Postoak I've shot estimated 9000+ of full power loads (500gr./2600fps) .460Wea. and the first about 3000 of those were from Wea. Mark V. with the barrel integral brake. I swear that the dam brake is 100% responsible for my noise intolerance. I won't have a brake never ever again. I've never fired .416 calibre of any kind so I can't tell you the difference. 9000 rounds of 460 weatherby is a hell of a lot of shooting with full house loads!! Used to be bigdoggy700 with 929 posts . Originally registered as bigdoggy 700 in July 2006.

9000 of .460Wea. full power loads my sound a lot to some, but over 32 years it is really nothing. If my wife would allow me to spend the money I would've double it if not tripple it. Jorge I like when a bloke like you calls himself a serious hunter. The type of hunting you do is just short of a red carpet, chear leaders squad and a musical band with a Hollywood filming crew. You may just as well go to the holding pan with your double and shoot a farmed cow while it's clamped down. At least it may be dead on the first shot in the right place. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt that you could manage that. Pyzda

Lavaca Only my first and only rifle for more than 3 years the .460Wea. Mark V fired any significant number of rounds (3000+) The accuracy dropped off at the end and it took for ages to clean the barrel. However the rest (8 rifles) ZKK 602's based and Ruger's No.1 in different configurations fired the estimated 6000-7000?? rounds between them. None of them had any accuracy issues yet. Pyzda

One day I fired 6 rounds from my CZ 416 Rigby, 5 rounds from my friends Winchester 416 rem and 5 from my Mark V 460 with a brake. The rigby had the most felt recoil and the 416 rem the least but all are about the same to me. The winchester fit a little better so maybe that was it. On another occasion I took the brake off the 460 and fired it twice. I won't do that again. It HURT worse than my 577, 600NE, and braked 600OK. I feel it just slaps the heck out of my where the heavies push like a train. Definatly more recoil in the heavies but more managable for me. Matthew FWIW I have fired somewhere between 500 and 5,000,000 rounds of 460 Weatherby all at rocks. They are all dead except the ones that I missed.

My .460 with a brake can be shot faster than my MP5k with the switch on the pictures of multiple bullets. After an estimated 9000 rnds it was warm to the touch! Its recoil is slightly more than a .22lr! I killed a charging rodent with it yesterday. I think it didn't penetrate fully though! -Rob Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large numbers to do incredibly stupid things- AH (1941)- Harry Reid (aka Smeagle) 2012 Nothing Up my sleeves but never without a plan and never ever without a surprise!

I am going to chamber a 460 next week for Rock Chuck hunting and it will be just under 17 pounds with a brake. It should be a good bench gun with the 250 grain bullets lifting the chucks to a new level. Ross

Rob You're a funny bloke and I quiet like your character. However I'm not planning to go to the States anytime soon, but if I do I'll let you know in advance. You say that you have a Wea. Mk. V in the .460 and we can make some use of it. I'll chalenge you to shoot the motherfucker of a gun with me. All I will ask you for is to load 120 rounds IMR 4350 122gr/500gr. Hornady RN. If you have the model I used to have with the integral brake I wanna a set of super mufflers and if you have the new removable brake we will take the brake off for the both of us. 20 shots each from the bench 20 shots off hand stationary targets timed 20 shots off hand on moving targets timed I do not care who will shoot first. Each of us will shoot in one continuous string of 60 rounds with 5 minutes break after every 5 shots. (just enough to cool the barrel). I'll pay for the ammo. This will be a strictly business only proposition. No photos, cameras, no friends, no hugs and kisses and when we finish I'll leave and that's the end of it. Maybe when you will see me you will better understand why I can shoot full loads in .460Wea. and enjoy it. Pyzda

Pyzda- You definitely are one crazed individual! We shootin for money or Ha Ha's? I've got the .460 and lots of bullets/powder cases. Brake on, Brake off who cares. Sounds like fun! You do know I shoot bigger guns than the .460 a lot and mostly offhand! I'm no He-Man but have had serious amounts of trigger time. 100 yrds closest to the Bull? Best of 10? Just letting you know! Come on over to Vegas sometime and bring your money! If your a good shot and a good loser, I'll probably give it back after you hand it over! Bring extra strength Ibuprofen injections! You are not Ztreh are you? He's a troll that also really likes .460's. I don't think he likes me anymore though! -Rob Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large numbers to do incredibly stupid things- AH (1941)- Harry Reid (aka Smeagle) 2012 Nothing Up my sleeves but never without a plan and never ever without a surprise!

Rob The deal is done. I normally don't go to Vegas, but Salt Lake City is close enough to take the detour. We most likely do exactly the same things, except you lucky dude shoot bigger guns than the .460Wea. Win, loss or draw I don't mind. As I said it's not my imediate plan to go to the States, but you'll know when I'm comming with plenty of time to prepare yourself. Practice on football size moving targets, they must be hit before they stop. Kick yourself a basketball as far as you can and hit it before it stops. If too easy start with the rifle down at your waist and with an empty chamber and recycle the bolt before you shoot. It's a good fun. BTW for this, the Mark V is far better than anything else there. (Short smooth bolt lift and no bolt binding). No worries you'll find it out soon by yourself. No painkillers are needed. I can feel 60 full power rounds out of .460Wea., but 10-15 good hits in a Rugby game are far more punishing. Pyzda

Pyrzda- you do know I invented "golf and shoot" it's played with a 7 iron and a "Weatherby .460". You have to hit the ball in the air. Sound like fun? I'm around!Gotta big desert to play in!For a warm up so you won't develop a bad flinch, you get to shoot the 12 GaFH 1000 gr load at 3200fps. if you prove worthy why then we play "golf and Shoot". worthy is defined as your still on your feet and you can still count the correct number of fingers I hold up!No falling down, no continuous drooling and both eyes must be able to focus together! I have been making brakes for over 20 years. I have found that brakes reduce recoil caused by gas pressure. They do very little to reduce recoil caused by bullet weight. Two seperate forces at work that come together as one to create recoil. That is why brakes are so effective on 7 mags, 300 mags though start to become less effective as the bullets gets heavier. Rob No shit. However, I may be wrong, but just by judging your 7 steel balls funny comment I'm comming to a sad conclusion that you have actually never used a rifle for a shotgun applications. I recomend that you to start kicking and shooting basketballs in the desert very soon, as I have some 25 years head start on you. It will be as I said, otherwise forget it. I'm not a Yank seeking an Internet fame or a Hollywood stardom. Just you and me, no wifes, no kids, no friends, no ejaculatorados, no self rectrum pleasureados, no photos, no any other filming from hidden wankerados. I don't wanna to know where you live, your phone number or anything else for that matter. On the moving targets we'll go 21 shot each, so there can't be a draw. We meet, we shoot and we both go in different directions after that. Strictly business. You win I loose or I win you loose. It is that simple. Pyzda
