Study the CIP drawings for the Max Cartridge and Minimum Chamber specs for:

1. 500 Jeffery

2. 12.7x70 (500 Schuler)

The 500 Schuler shoulder in CIP is same as the Romey Hybrid in Alf's monograph.

The 500 Jeffery shoulder is the same in CIP as in the monograph.

It seems the only consistant one everywhere you look is the original 1928 Kynoch 500 Jeffery.

Kynoch and CIP show it as the one and only 500 Jeffery.

It would be the surest thing to specify the original 500 Jeffery (CIP) to get dies to match rifle chamber.

or
Use the CIP specs for the 500 Schuler, and make your brass headstamp match the barrel engraving if traveling.

The CIP shoulder semi-angles for the maximum brass are:

500 Jeffery: 12.65 degrees
12,7x70 (500 Schuler): 19.96 degrees

Forget the Romey Hybrid. It is not CIP.

Just my 2 cents.

Great post Rip, I got my 500 Jeffery load straight out of "Any Shot You Want". 570g TSX, Federal 215 primers, 103g H4895 for about 2300 fps ... very accurate and no issues at high ambient temperaturs (I've had cartridges sitting on the bench then shot them at 100 degrees ambient).

The case was never loaded with cordite commercially. Not once. That is a myth and cross referenced "recollection" with the Gibbs. The case is too small for the velocity with cordite period. The Schuler was designed from the start for flake

But it looks like their drawing shows a CIP 500 Schuler masquerading as a 500 Jeffery.

That's OK.

If one is using 500 Jeffery brass, and wants to use a 500 Schuler chamber reamer and reloading dies, then do so,
though have the barrel engraving say "500 Jeffery."
If 500 Schuler brass is stockpiled, go 500 Schuler all the way.

Or go 500 Jeffery all the way.
Just stick to the CIP specs shown in the link provided by Forrest above.
500 Jeffery barrel engraving.
500 Jeffery headstamped brass.
500 Jeffery CIP spec chamber reamer.
500 Jeffery CIP spec reloading dies.

The only way I would trust the 500 Jeffery or 500 Schuler ugly duckling cartridges is in a straight-stack, in-line-pushfeed Weatherby Mark V. Wink
