From what cartridge is the .458 win mag made? I know (I think) that it is the same length as 30-06. So the question is can any riffle that is chambered for 30-06 be chambered to .458 win mag or is there something else to it. Sauer and Zeiss, perfect match. Sherpi

I can't remember which came first, but the .458 is the same case as the 300 Win. Mag, the 264 Win Mag, 7mm Rem Mag, 338 Win Mag, etc. It is originally based on the 300 H&H/375 H&H case, that is shortened so that the overall length of the cartridge is similar to the 30-06. You can rebarrel an "06" action to .458, but you will have to have the bolt face opened up and some work done on the magazine and or feed rails since the .458 is larger in diameter. Hope this helps.

The .458 Win. Mag. is based on the .375 H&H Mag. case. Not the .30-06. The H&H Mag. case is the basis for all of the "short magnums" of the '50s and '60s, including the .458 Win. Generally speaking, the H&H Mag. based rounds are belted (unlike the '06), are "fatter" than the '06 and have a bigger head diameter. Rifles chambered for '06 based cartridges need a bit of work to accommodate those based on the H&H Mag. case, even if the cartridge overall length is the same or close to that of the '06. The .300 win is a different animal than the .338 win and .264 win. The 7mm rem mag was based on the same case as the .264 and .338, but was introduced by rem later. Idea was to take the same H&H base that Weatherby had been popularizing, and make cartridges that would fit in a "standard" (.30-06 length) action. These were dubbed Westerner (.264 win), Alaskan (.338 win), and African (.458 win)... Dan

as for length , YES as for width, you'll need to pay someone to change that as for bolt face - MAYBE, but probably jeffe opinions vary band of bubbas and STC hunting Club Information on Ammoguide about the416AR, 458AR, 470AR, 500AR What is an AR round?
