Question:
ok every one here is my question i have 2 ruger 1's to convert but am only going to change 1 for now. they are right now a 375 h&h and a 416 rigby.

ps these rifles may be used in the future as back up rifles to my 700 nitro or possible a 577 nitro searcy double.

witch nitro express should i convert it into i am leaning to a 500 nitro

Choices:
470 nitro
470 capstick i like this one.
500 nitro
577 nitro

No contest.
500 NE, then you can shoot 50 BMG target and milsurp bullets for kicks, when not hunting with regular softs and solids.
No contest whatsoever.

Anything bigger than a 450-400 will kick the snot out of you in a No 1. I guess I don't see the point in this generally.

Is it possible to build a 577 in a Ruger #1?

I've heard the big Nitros (.577 &.600 for sure) require some machining on the #1 action. That would turn me off to it. Not to mention the trumpet they put on the end of the barrel.

I voted for the .470 Capstick........ A most overlooked "big boy" even sixty plus years ago when it was called the .475 OKH!

I also would not want a No.1 in any N.E. caliber other than the 450-400-3"...The others only have bragging rights, not shootable rights.

I have one in 470 NE (rebore from 458). It shoots great and really isn't that bad to shoot, even from the bench.
You must change the recoil pad and add a mercury tube in the stock.

For your purposes I voted for the 500NE, and I believe it to be the largest chambering the Ruger No1 is suited to!

For my purposes the new Ruger No1 chambered for 405 Win, is a perfect candidate for re-chambering to a NE cartridge. It would be a simple re-chamber and a little exractor mod to turn it into a 450/400NE 3"! The sights, sling swivel are already installed, and the only thing needed for comfortable shooting is the installation of a good recoil pad! The 458 Win mag No1 can be re-chambered to 458 LOTT without any other work other than a recoil pad, with no extractor work at all!

The 577NE is too large for the No1 action! The treaded portion of the action, as well as the loading tray have to be heavily modified, thus weakening the action considerably!

I have a 458 Win mag No1 that is new and unfired, but I can't decide whether to re-chamber it to 458 LOTT, or go to 450NE 3 1/4". I'm leaning toward the 450NE

.458 Lott is a Ruger factory chambering. There was rumors of Ruger chambering a NE cartridge or two in the #1, but I doubt we will ever see it. It would be easy enough for them, though.

what would be nice is if ruger made a number 1 action about .250 thou wider and a little taller basicaly scale it up a wee bit and chamber in some of the nitro caliber that would be awsome and imagine the possibiltys with a larger ruger action.

ill probably end up chambering it in 470.....

A close friend of mine shoots the 50-140 Sharps 3-1/4" smokeless on a TCR83. It is more modernley known as the 510 NE. Brass was by Bertram (I believe Aussie made) I have shot this round at the range and can only say WOW! We were hurling 650 grain jacketed bullets at 2150 fps and 750 grain hard cast paper patched at 1900 fps, which caused about 90 ft-lbs of recoil with over 6000 ft-lbs of ME. What a cartridge. It is ballistically equivilant, if not slightly more potent then the 500 NE.

Back to the question, get the 500 NE or the 50-140 Sharps smokeless, have SSK build it.

Why not go for a bit smaller in the bore department and higher in the energy and penitration area? I was thinking of some thing like the .366 DGW you can find it on page 201 of Cartridges of the World in the tenth edition.

I voted .470 but a .450NE would be great & you could use any of the 400-550gr cast bullets as well. I agree w/ Ray though, recoil will be rough in a #1 unless you restock.

i've shoot neal's 458 watts in a #1.... of course the same "range" visit i shot a 585 and a 470 mbogo...

While I noticed that the watts kicked, it didn't kick NEARLY as bad as I was epxecting.. and these were fullhouse 500 gr sps....

with that as a reference, a 450 no#2 or a 470 would make no noticable difference in recoil.. and be something that you could shoot all day.

ESPECIALLY since you could use pistol bullets in the 470 and shoot all day for 30 bucks.

of course i think a 458 win is a popgun
