The rifle is special to me, I killed and ele with it. So, do you know:

1. Is a rechamber and rebore enough or will I need to have the barrel set back?

2. Can I fire form and use the 375 brass?

3. Any feeding problems to be expected?

4. Is this a bad idea?

Thanks for the help.

Not a bad idea, but IMO, it would be best to rebarrel to 416 RM and keep your old 375 barrel, if needed in the future.

Yes provided you have enough meat on the barrel a rebore and rechamber would work. No set back required. You can blow out 375 brass but since they are the same starting length when you blow them out you are going to get a shorter case.

You didn't mention the action but I doubt you will have much if any feeding issues. I happen to prefer new barrels vs rebores why do you want to keep the old barrel? Sights contour?

Only you can decide if it is a bad idea. I tend to leave "special" rifles alone. If you want a 416 Rem then your project will work. What do you need to hit harder? Or just want a 416 just because?

You say the rifle is special so I say Option #4, Don't mess with it.

If you rebore then you will take a lot of metal and a noticeable amount of weight from the barrel. If you rebarrel then you will likely, and should, end up with a thicker and heavier barrel. Either way, the rifle just won't feel or handle the same.

You could always start looking for another rifle in .416. Leave the rifle you have memories with as is.

NUMBER 4...DON'T MESS WITH A GOOD THING. Leave it alone...if you don't want to shoot I anymore hung it on the wall. Don't mess with nostalgia because when you do..

416 REMS are a dime a dozen, irreverently speaking...there EVERY WHERE and cheap.

SH** fingers got messed up.

Don't mess with nostalgia, because when you do...it's gone forever and you will regret it for just as long.

Check the prices of the 416's on the auction sites, used one's in gun shops and hock shops or for $850 or less you can have a brand new 416 Ruger and take it out to something larger if you like the pain.

Each of my "favorite" shooters that have stories to tell are looked at several times a week and those memories are recalled and put a smile on my face no matter how whizzed off I am or what the day brought...all the others are subject to a re-do at any time without a thought.

Well, I'm partial to the .416" bore but I would leave the 375H&H and just get a new rifle for 'heavier'. There are a lot of choices, many inexpensive if based on a CZ or Ruger Hawkeye.

Well its do-able, the rest is conjuncture!

Bottom line???? Whatever blows your skirt up!

I have been doing a lot with rebored barrels, I use High Plains Reboring, nrjonsn@westriv.com and all the barrels he has done for me shoot great. Cost of a rebore is about half what a new barrel costs by the time you get it installed.

Had my son's Remington 700 DGR 375 H&H rebored and rechambered to 416 Remington by Delta Gunshop (Jim Dubiel). Total cost was around $450 which included a trigger job. Rifle has served my son well, feeds and functions and is as accurate as before. In the end couldn't tell the rifle was ever touched, no shop or handling marks from the operation.
