Other than Dakota, anyone know a source for brass in this caliber? How close is fire-forming .416 Rigby brass?

We're going to be "gifted" with a health care plan we are forced to purchase and fined if we don't, Which purportedly covers at least ten million more people, without adding a single new doctor, but provides for 16,000 new IRS agents, written by a committee whose chairman says he doesn't understand it, passed by a Congress that didn't read it but exempted themselves from it, and signed by a President, with funding administered by a treasury chief who didn't pay his taxes, for which we'll be taxed for four years before any benefits take effect, by a government which has already bankrupted Social Security and Medicare, all to be overseen by a surgeon general who is obese, and financed by a country that's broke!!!!! I don't know why you would want to use Rigby brass, just buy the Dakota, it's actually cheaper. http://www.midwayusa.com/ebrowse.exe/browse?TabID=1&Cat...*652***670***9013***

GAH,

The .450 Dakota was designed by Art Alphin, and he actually based it on the Excaliber case which has some slight differences when compared to the Rigby brass.

A-Square is selling brass again, so you can check with them...jim

Mopane,

Thanks for the offer, sounds great, but I don't even have the finished rifle yet! In fact, I have not decided whether to have it converted to .450 Dakota or .450 Rigby. That's why I'm researching the availability of brass for each round.

What I have is a CZ 550 (Hog Back) in .416 Rigby that I am going to convert by having it rebored, rechambered and restocked.

Several people have told me the Rigby is easier to work with, while other say there's no significant difference between the two. All I want is a gun that spits 500-grains slugs at 2500 fps, feeds flawlessly and looks damn good in the posed pictures with the dead elephant. Big Grin

GAHUNTER, if properly head stamped brass is important to you, I'd suggest getting an adequate amount of brass before even considering chambering in 450 Dakota. There is very little 416, 423 and 450 Dakota brass around and if Dakota decides it will no longer throw money down the proprietary cartridge rat hole, there may be a day when head stamped cases are very difficult to find.

Good question, easy answer: since the rifle is already set up for, and chambered for, the Rigby round, then, in theory, rechambering for simply another Rigby round should be a snap. No bolt face work; no magazine work, no feeding ramp work.

I learned my lesson the hard (and EXPENSIVE) way about trying to convert a rifle to a dissimilar round, when I converted a .375 H&H to 404 Jeffery. Five years and five grand later, it still doesn't feed.

You will only be needing head stamped brass if you go to Africa! Build either, since they are all 416 Rigby basic brass necked down to 45 caliber. Buy a couple hundred basic cases from Jamison, and ONE stinking box of 20 of the Dakota or Rigby cases. Do your load work with the basic. Load and fire the good stuff one time, then put that brass up until you start taking malaria pills. You will have no feeding hassles unless you use Wbee brass, since it is the only one of the three to use a belt. I have a 510 KX on the Rigby cylindrical, so I know how it works.

Be sure to check which variety of 450 Dakota brass you have, or are buying. They are not entirely the same. The new brass has about - 100 fps with same powder charge as my original 450 Dakota brass. Both are good quality with many many full power reloads on each case.

The new brass says Dakota Arms 450.

It is also quite a bit lighter than the original brass, and that is one reason I used it as I was watching my ammo weight in case airlines actually weighed my ammo.

The new and old brass did not shoot to same POI in my rifle either. About 2 inches different. So you will have to settle on one or the other if possible.
