458 Lott Barrel contour question
What do you folks think of a #5 contour for a 458 Lott for a Montana rifle Company barreled action? Muzzle diameter is .700. Barrel length is 24 inches.

I'd say that is perfect also.

#5 and 0.700" at the 24" muzzle would be as light as I would go and should balance well with no added weight in the butt.

#6 or up to 0.750" at the muzzle would be if you want it a bit heavier, and want to add weight to the butt.

For comparison note that some do go sportier.
SIGARMS builds the Prechtl actioned Magnum Mauser in .450 Dakota with a 25" long barrel that is 0.667" at the muzzle. CZ makes their .458 Lott and WinMag with a barrel of same length and muzzle diameters that I have measured from 0.666" to 0.670".

Thanks for the input. As heavy as the MRC's are the barreled action will weigh close to 8 and add 2 1/2 for the stock. Just wanted to make sure the barrel was large enough.

to be clear, you'll need to compare the #X contour measurements.. for example, a shilen #4 is generally a bit lighter than a douglas or pacnor, but their #5 is HUGE...

8# for action and 2.5 for stock? that's freaking HEAVY.. add another .75 pound for recoilpad, cross and axial bolts, bedding and stock finish, then 1.5# for scope and mounts, you are nearly 13# in a lott....

aim for 9.25to 9.75 before scope... its way easier to add 6oz than to remove it. if the stock fits you LOP, it'll work just fine

I agree it will be a little heavier than I want but it is the smallest contour they will use on a 45 caliber. The 8 pounds for the barreled action was an estimate quoted to me by MRC. I hope it weighs less. The stock is supposed to weigh no more than 2 1/2 finished.
Does the 8 pound estimate for the MRC barreled action seem reasonable?

Correction: MRC just informed me weight will be 7.25 to 7.5

my 404 is a #5 from MRC and it's no where as heavy as the original estimates.

The above quote is a lot closer to the truth.
