after trying a few bolt actions in 500 jeffery(a heym) 460 wby and 458 lott i have desided i want to stick with double rifles i just dont feel comfortable with the bolts as much as i do with a good double gun.
so here is my question........i need a double that will plow through a elephant bulls skull from any (resonable angle)and must be no more than say 14 pounds.
i have come down to these 2 guns the 500 nitro and the 577 i was talking to butch and he highly recomends the two calibers and he says he can make me a 13-14 pound 577 nitro and the 500 comes standard at around 12-13 pounds
what do you guys think?

I don't want to pack anything over about 10 lbs give or take 6 ounces....A 500 is a better penitrating caliber than a 577 as is the .470....I see no need for anything bigger than a .470 or 458 Lott in big bores other than to please the desires of the shooter...In fact I am perfectly satisfied with a 404 or 416 Rem, which will shoot completely through an elephant skull as easily as a 500 or a 577....

i think your right dan i am leaning twords the 500 anyways a nice 11 pound double would serve me well the 577 is to close in weight to my 700 to make a difference.
i am only considering double rifles. but thanks for the info any way guys.
hey ray would you use a remington safarie grade 416 or would you stay with a crf?

Since you already have the 700 I would get a 470. I pick the 470 over the 500 simply because It is easier to find 470 ammo. Also the 470 will kick less and be a little lighter, which might be a good thing after carrying and shooting the 700.

NE 450 i am going to go with the 500 i handload all of my ammo so i dont care about finding loading ammo for it.
plus i like the slightly heavyer bullet of the 500 and the little bit of extra stopping power. plus they cost the same so i might as well get the most bang for my buck.

700, I suspect that 450 no. 2 was trying to say that if your luggage is lost, you have about a 10x better chance of finding 470 nitro ammo in Bots or Zim than 500 NE. That being said, you have a 10x better chance finding 500 NE than finding 577 NE. And if the airline loses that 700 NE ammo, you better call Butch and have him hop on a plane with some cartridges, because you will be the only guy on the African continent with that caliber! Unless of course you happen to be in camp with the famous gentleman from Germany or the famous gentleman from Beverly Hills who like to hunt with that caliber.

What about the Winchester controlled round push feed? It looks kind of like the Savage that was made in 375H&H and .458. It may not have a claw extractor, but it does have controlled round feed.

No offense, but in my opinion, hunting Africa with one of those would be like calf roping while wearing a French beret.

500grains Thanks, that is exactly the point I was trying to make. It might be a good idea to have one rifle that you MIGHT be able to get ammo for locally.

i understand what you were trying to say but i have basicaly made up my mind. I really like the 500 and from the few people that i have talked to i think i will like it the same as, if not more than the 470.
i am trying to get the most power i can get from a double but still keep the weight of the rifle down

No offense taken. I had just looked at the ads for them and it seemed that Winchester was trying to convince you that it was okay for them to make a cheaper rifle and you should still buy it. I thought that it was interesting that it looks almost identical to the Savage Controlled feed system.

700 nitro Go for the 577. You can shoot slugs will put penetrate the 500. Ross Seyfried puts the 577 in a new category, called Crushers. While you are these why not get a matched pair. Annother great alternative would be a 577 Rewa. Who will you order the gun from?
Atkinson. Have you finally decided to step out of the closes and admit that mausers are the thing Say those old no good push feeds you got. What to do with them...trade for a hose?
Quote: no not yet its starting to get on my nerves but there is nothing i can do about it i am waiting on approval from the stat dept
butch mailed my my barrels today so i will have them and he will send me the action asap hopfually soon.
Let this be a lesson to you: Get yourself in gear and get your U.S. passport. You are a U.S. citizen who is inadvertently carrying the wrong passport. Once you have a U.S. passport, Butch can just send the stuff to an FFL in Niagra Falls, NY without pissing around with the State Department.
Unfortunately, with a Canadian passport you may face similar hassles when trying to transport your rifle through the U.S. temporarily on your way to Botswana.
The other advantage of a U.S. passport is that you will be eligible for the draft.

A NYS driver's license is sufficient to purchase a long gun in almost all counties of NY state (the five counties of my hometown, New York City, are a notable exception).

Quote: i gotta call the pass port service tomorro i went over there web page and got all the information i need .
i am going to wait till i come back from africa to do anything i dont need to accidently mess anything up.
Do it now, but do not relinquish physical control of your Canadian passport. If you are luck, you will travel to Africa with a U.S. passport and not have to deal with that temporary transit with firearm B.S.
