I'm building a 416 Talyor and asking for some input on barrel length, my blank is 27", way to long. Also I'd like some input in barrel band sling swivels, how far in front of the forend do they usually go?

Hey there,
My bbl is 23.(Ideal for marauding dwg's) It is that length because that's where the Ruger banded front sight fit. It looks cool though with the bbl contour and forearm length. The swivel band is about 1.5" ahead of the forearm. Make it 20-21" if Griz in the alders are in the future or 24-25" if plains game is the goal. Longer will go faster but probably not enough to really make a difference. Look through a bunch of pictures to find something that looks good to you.

I put a 25 inch on mine. One can always cut the barrel shorter but one can not add to it.

20 to 22 inches is mighty handy and you don't lose much in velocity.

if you want to get near 2400 with just being a bit over pressure, 27" .. want a realizstic 2250? 23".. 21" is fine.

center line of barrel band should be (barrel length/2)+1 from the receiver

opinions vary band of bubbas and STC hunting Club

My .416 Ruger is 21 1/2" and I think thats plenty long enough, they are neally ballistic twins so I thought I'd add my opinion.

PC,

What's your bullet weight and what velocity are you getting on the 416 Ruger?

I had my 458 cut back from 26" to 23". Really improved the balance and handling!

Would recommend 23" as a good compromise between velocity loss, handling and sight radius with iron sights.

For me barrel length has more to do with balance than velocity. I can appreciate the value of a shorter barrel in brush, and a longer barrel for a deliberate rifle. Mine wound up being 22 inches, because that put the balance point where I wanted it. I figured that my Taylor should handle like a shotgun, and it does.

Im yet to chrono my load but currently I am using 75gr of Varget behind the 410gr woodleigh Round Nose (the cannelure is in the right spot to for my .416 Ruger rifle......this is the bullet woodleigh designate for the .416 Rigby)

I would think that speeds are around the 2250-2350 fps mark.

I have shot two feral pigs with this load recently; one a large boar and it punched a fist sized hole through its spine in the middle of the hog and the second one was a smaller pig shot qaurtering away if I recall correctly and it penetrated completely as to be expected.

I may load a 350gr pill in this rifle once I use all my 410 gr loads up.

My 416 RUGER has a 22 inch /No 4 krieger profile, BOOTS OBERMYER made the barrel .
i would start with a 26 inch tube , and just cut of an inch at a time , until the balance is right for you, you can always cut a longer barrel down, but you cant make a short barrel longer

I started off with my re-barrel project with 28 inch thinking I would cut it down later if I chose to do so. My 416 Taylor is for elk, moose and bear here in BC, doubt I'll get to Africa. I like it a lot and don't think I'll cut it down, but have another action I want to re-barrel in 416 T and with it I'll try 22 or 24 inch for hunting thick brush.

Cheers - Bob.
