The following loads were found on the internet.
THESE ARE NOT TESTED - USE THEM AT YOUR OWN RISK

bullet ---------- powder in grains --------- velocity
525 ------------- 90.0 IMR 4064 ------------ 1750
600 ------------- 50.0 AA 5744 ------------- 1450
600 ------------- 55.0 AA 5744 ------------- 1540
680 ------------- 45.0 AA 5744 ------------- 1350

I also emailed Accurate Powders and asked them for load data for 505 Gibbs using 5744 powder.
This is what they sent me. THESE ARE NOT TESTED

bullet ---------- powder in grains --------- velocity
535 ------------- 55.0 AA 5744 ------------- 1600
535 ------------- 62.5 AA 5744 ------------- 1800
535 ------------- 70.0 AA 5744 ------------- 1900
600 ------------- 52.0 AA 5744 ------------- 1525
600 ------------- 58.5 AA 5744 ------------- 1650
680 ------------- 65.0 AA 5744 ------------- 1800

In looking for a mild whitetail deer load, the following loads were tested in my rifle - it has a 21" barrel.

bullet ---------- powder in grains --------- velocity
350 ------------- 55.0 IMR 4198 ------------ 1630 (short case)
350 ------------- 55.0 IMR 4198 ------------ 1590
525 ------------- 56.0 AA 4744 ------------- 1500
525 ------------- 60.0 AA 5744 ------------- 1600

First shots through my gun today. 24" bbl
105gr RE15, 535 TSX, 2247-2311 fps, recoil very manageable, cratered primers which really surprised me. Nickudu's data on the reloading page uses much more powder.

factory Norma 600 Woodleigh, 2138 fps, recoiled noticeably more, I would have to work into that recoil level. I wonder about powder type and recoil. In general, with a few other guns and loads I thinks think the faster powders kick less given the same velocity.

Hello Dan416,

Faster powders recoil less because generally you use use less powder for a given velocity, than slower powders. The powder weight is a factor in recoil.

I use this site's "recoil calculator" to estimate and determine what recoil will be.

Just a word of caution. I have noticed erratic ignition for loads less than 128gn of Powder in my 505 Gibbs. I would recommend using a filler if you are loading less than 128gn of powder.

I'm using 4 and 5 grains of polyester batting as a filler. It is very tight down on the powder when seating the bullet.

I use a 1" long piece of 5/8" dia foam backing rod. It only weighs .9 grains and works great.

I've been reading over on the double rifle forum about fillers. Backer rod seems to be a favorite. I am concerned about my cratered primers. I also see a product called Puff-Lon that looks interesting.

Buckstix, how does that rifle shoot? I looked at the rifle a few years ago and fell in love with it but I was afraid the overall size of the rifle would make it a hassle to shoot and handle.. Always have been a fan of the .505.

New sight and barrel band sling swivel. I trimmed off the original sling swivel to just about flush with the forearm to plug the hole. Now the gun looks much better.

Gunslinger, I am going to make a sizer die to bring .510-.512 cast gas check bullets down to 505 Gibbs usability. My bore is .5060-.5065 so my goal is to get them to .507". This should make the shooting more enjoyable on the wallet. .006" reduction on a 1/2" bullet should be easy. It seems some guys are making hard cast gas checked bullets do 2000-2100fps easily. (If what they post in the internet is true!)

I have a first Gen CZ custom from triple river. I sent it back and they rebedded and worked the action and a few other things as the first ones did not work that great. I have the big NECG front sight base and elevated express sights. This limits the sight inserts to the .177 high very small dot front sights. I want a BIG highly visible front sight. This is a 50 yard DG low light tool after all not a long range plinker.

After mucho discussion with Harlan Satrang from triple river the gun is going back again free of charge to get a new FSB and sight setup. I wish they did this the first time. I will pay shipping and work done free. I think that is a fair deal and shows that they will stand behind gun. I also confirmed that there is a lifetime warranty on stock cracking. They are trying hard.

I need to find out if I go 3 position safety and some of the other AHR mods like on my Lott if it will mess with warranty.

I am planning a hunt around this rifle so I want it setup just the way I want it.

My last hunt I opted for the film time with the demo rifles and took them instead of mine and did not like the setup. Rifles are a very personal thing and I am particular. This Gibbs is almost perfect. Just needs a bit of tweaking.

I'll post a before and after if I can figure out how it's been a while.

Gunslinger, you will have to slug the bore or use Cerrosafe to find groove dia. I just got a proper reloading die tonight to make a sizer out of so I can order some cast bullets tomorrow.

Forgot to say I like a large front bead also. The Ruger front sight I just put on has a 1/16" bead - way too small. My 416 has a 1/8" and a wide English V which I like. Another modification to keep me busy.
