I would like to have help locating a gunsmith that can lenghthen my standard magazine to acept the 375 h h cartridge...THANKS

I just use Win 70 magazine boxes; no need to try to lengthen a stock one.

Could you be a little more specific? Did you want to keep the bottom metal and have the magazine box (between the action and floorplate) replaced or did you want the box modified? Also, is there a location that would be more convenient for you?

Your problem has already been solved by the 375 Ruger. The 375 Ruger fits in a standard length magazine and even packs a few more grains of capacity for more punch should you desire. The rails MAY need slight polishing toward the ramp for feeding, but maybe not.

I think Brownells used to make one specifically for this conversion. IMO get a catalog as I find it difficult to find items on the website.

By the way, my location is Sacramento, CA. A little history of the rifle...It was gifted to me by a close friend who was a Gunsmith after W,W 2 and developed a wildcat cartridge based on the 375 hh mag case, cut down to fit in a standard magazine box. he built 10 of these rifles, and the one he gave me was the last one. my desire is to take it straight to 375 hh mag. the bolt seems to be an 03 with 375 face, cocking on closing.the winchchester 375 magazine box fits and I am doing some feeding adjustments. I planed to have Pac-Nor do the barrel and fitting..
any recomendations on barrel leingh , turns and rifling..?

I've been through this - having a 404 Jeffery on a 1917 Winchester.

Let me tell you what I did, the results, and what I think are better options from what I learned.

What I Did:

1) I opened up the receiver and did some of the final feeding tuning, but most was done by a gunsmith

2) He used the stock magazine, flipped the end arounds (makes it longer), matched the receiver, did not open the sides - the half circle ears still match, slightly pushed out the slides of the magazine.

3) I used a bottom metal (without the integral mag) from Duane. I fit the bottom metal and mag box together myself.

4) It holds 4 down with a standard stock profile. It will hold 5 375 H&H down. I built my daughter a 35 Whelen - so the mag / action setup was factory and it holds 6 down.


What I should have done

A) Got a bottom metal from Duane with an integral mag. I assume it would hold five down. My rifle would hold five down with a properly sized mag box

OR

B) Had the gunsmith build a properly sized mag. I didn't know better, thought he would have.


What am I doing to correct to get 5 down

1) My rifle is epoxy steel bedded and the bedding minus the magazine is...... the correct size of the magazine well should be.

2) My magazine with the front and rear metal in place is the correct length; so I intend to keep the ends and either attach to the rifle stock permanently or mold additional epoxy in place or skeletonize the current magazine for the front and rear to connect

3) If I remove the magazine, I will need to blend the receiver underside into the epoxy mag well as it aligns with the metal magazine with the half ears.

First, if it works, man, don't change it -- sounds like a 375 taylor - which is easy peasy to make ammo for -- with little to gain by going to full length .. in fact, VERY little to gain, for lots of time and money ... and if you MUST have a factory round, may i STRONGLY suggest having it rechambered for 375 ruger -- it the rifle held together with a 375 shorty, it'll likley do fine, with minimal feeding work needed

I was! but your advise on the Chatfield Taylor makes a lot of since..It was a favorite of mine early on, easy to load and I could duplicate the 375 H&H with ease...Later on I just went with the 375 H&H for ease of finding ammo (which I never had to do so???) sounded like a good idea at the time but overthinking) but mostly nostalgia...The 375 Ruger is, in fact, the best 375 today IMO..Lord I hate to say that!! and refuse to give up on the H&H..its a do as I say, not do as I do thingie..
