Timan404 Jeffery in progress
This is a 404 I've been woirking up, it's built on one my actions. A 4140 steel one. It has the Recnegel banded lug express sight that goes on the lothar 5130 contour barrel, I should get a better picture of that I guess. It has a buffalo horn forend tip. I still need to do some more shaping to it and sand and finish it. I posted some machine inletting of this one a while back on about the 15th of December. I machined the inlet undersize and hand let the metal in for a perfect fit, then shaped the outside wack and chop method with hand tools. I do mostly metal work, I really enjoy the wood. After this one I'm back on metal work.
That's all the candy I've got for now

Marc_Stokeldboth the wood and metal look great and I am looking forward to seeing the finished product. I also love your choice of blank.

DavidCStu,
What a great looking rig! How many 404 rounds does the mag hold?
More pics?

TimanIt's a 4+1 for capacity. New Guy ordered the sights and sent them to me, I think he went through NECG, the 404 is his rifle. Yea, Vap. it's nearly impossible, expecially when a guy gets a new camera for christmas.

RIPStuart,
O.K., you are multi-talented. Another masterpiece in the making.

Hurry up and finish that thing, so you can get to work on those stainless M98 magnum actions!

new_guyThis gun will be at booth # 952 at the Dallas show if anyone wants to stop by and take a first-hand look at Stuart's work.

TimanYes sir, I've got the pedal to the metal, in fact it's in the oil pan. I've about got this 404 out of my hair, there's light at the end of the tunnel for this one and it's not a train, cause I can see the blue sky from here. Then It's HARDCORE METAL TIME.

This will be at the top of my "Things to See" list for Dallas. Congrats to both Stuart and New Guy; I can't wait to see it in person.

gunmakerLooking good Stu! Are your fingers purple yet?

02 January 2007, 17:35
RIPStuart,
I just noticed that there is a heck of a lot of steel chips that must be made when you make an action, judging from the height of the incomplete rear square bridge.
Please talk to me sometime before you draw up the plans for the QRW/Picatinny profile on my action.
It should be profiled on top like a Leupold QRW base, yet stand high and proud enough to fit the Badger rings, no more.
One cross-slot on the rear base and two cross-slots on the front base, so as to give it that QRW/Picatinny-hybrid look and function.
Parallel to bore, please. No need for any tilt.

TimanYep, got the purple palms, vinegar helps with that.
.366,the mantra is "get it done" "get it done". Don't play with it, work on it, get it done!!
Then when they get done they go away, as they should, as their owners deserve. Then it's on to the next one, whatever the job may be.

D HumbargerExcellent workmanship Stuart.

I am courious as to why you omitted the bolt opening cam on the rear of the rear bridge. Are you relying on the cams on the locking lugs to do that function?

TimanRip,
Yes, that is what I will do. It is just extra steel that always comes off upon setting up for the scope rings. I'll get together with the guys at HMC about sizes for the Badger ring.
Badger offers a stainless ring, right?
Stu

Hum.
No, it has the extraction cam at the rear bridge like any other Mauser. If you look at the picture you can see where the bolt handle root has been camming at the rear bridge there's a dark mark where it makes contact, this is normal all mausers must do this, in order to extract. After I finish cutting that rear bridge to shape it will look more familiar to you.

bulldog563Nice Work!!
Do you do anything different for a rifle that will be fitted with claw mounts if you are just making the action and not the whole rifle?
02 January 2007, 19:31
RIPStuart,
Stainless rings or scope tubes I do not like. Matte black all the way. Parkerized rings and even the entire stainless barreled action may be matte black by the time I am finished with it. However it will be tempting to leave it as a bead-blasted stainless finish ... so as to remind future museum goer's. I can hear it now, in 2107, at the NRA/Buffalo Bill Museum in Cody, Wyoming, the tour guide saying:
"Folks, here is another example of the innovative work of Satterlee Arms, founded over a century ago by Stuart Satterlee, whose descendants now dominate the gun trade world wide.
"This particular piece is built around the world's first stainless steel Mauser 98 magnum action, first produced in the year 2007 by Stuart Satterlee himself. The rifle chambering is for the then new .395 Tatanka, which has since dethroned Holland and Holland's old reliable .375 H&H as the all purpose rifle for safari as well as being a top 1000-yard target rifle.
"Old Doc Berry, AKA Bwana Rip, the original owner, and also creator of the .395 Tatanka cartridge, left this to us when he passed on last month at the age of 152 years.
"And we all remember Old Rip, now don't we?."
At this point the tour guide and his audience break out in loud guffaws and giggles.
