Does anyone have the new copy of Precision Shooting? I was told it contains an article about a new DG wildcat that is reported to be the cat's meow. What is it?

I found the issue of Precision Shooting. It's featured on the cover and is an update on the development of a cartridge that was first announced to the public during the 2001 Safari Club Convention.

The .400 Tembo, so it's actually old news. It says the .400 Tembo is the results of a joint project w/ Dr. Kevin Robertson, Edd Woslum, Randy Brooks and John Krieger. Goal has been to design a 40 caliber w/ minimum .310SD to produce a minimum of 110ft-seconds of momentum in a standard action w/ low recoil. Randy Brooks designed a new .400 Barnes X w/ .312SD, they shortened and modified a .404 Jeffery case to make it more efficient and surpassed the original goals. The've tested five different rifle configurations of the .400 Tembo in Africa over the past four years and report that it has been impressive.

416 Howell or 404 Dakota ?

The .450/.400s have been impressive in Africa for a couple of centuries now, so I am not surprised folks are happy with yet another .400.

In the last few years we have had the .400 Pondoro, the .400 H&H and the .400 Tembo. I recall the Tembo was written up in African Hunter in Vol. 7 of the magazine.

I would be more interested in hearing about the rifles, as a hunter needs a better rifle way more than another cartridge. (I stole that idea from Jeff Cooper.)

It will be a cold day in hell when the improve the 404 Jefferys or the 450-400 or for that matter the 375 or 300 H&H...

Blowing out shoulders, shortening rounds, all adds to feeding problems on a DGR IMO, and most of the improved cartridges fail in the field sooner or later, mostly with extractions, but sometimes up the tube...These new/actually old as the English did all that a century or two ago and nothing today is new, it's just novel for newbies...best leave the improved and shortened rounds to the accuracy set, New and improved is an oxymoran in the gun world......

The 400Tembo on the cover of PS is nothing new, but a 1959 Model 70 express w/ the following features: NECG 3 leaf rear and barrel banded ivory front sights, Talley barrel band sling swivel, LEU 1.5-5x w/ Talley screw lock rings and mounts and Sunny Hill drop belly bottom metal. The stock is a dark grained English walnut w/ a hand oil finish. The rifle belongs to one of the co-inventor's wife, Leanne Woslum. The impetus for the Tembo may be to have a lady friendly cartridge that would be good for a PH as well.

I'm with Ray, that old 404 is just fine like it is and ain't no flys on 300 and 375 H&H's either.

some of the wildcatting is kinda like lowering the roof a car so you can get taller people in it, some of it just don't make sense to me.

When you crunch the numbers it's easy to see why the 404Jeffery is a winner:
Taylor-KO of approx. 50 w/ the recoil of approx. 40ft-lbs (same as 375HH) and bullet SD greater than .310.

The numbers of the .404Tembo match this:
Taylor approx. 50, recoil of approx. 40ft-lbs and SD greater than .310. The only thing it appears they accomplished different was to do this in a shorter case to use in a standard action. But doesn't the Jeffery fit in a standard action?

The 404Dakota has the power of the Jeffery, but I think it has greater recoil (I think it's based off the Rigby).

The 375HH has about the same recoil but way down on power compared to the Jeffery w/ lower SD (under .310).

If the Jeffery can go in a standard action I don't understand their need for the Tembo, unless maybe it shoots flatter for plains game.

Do we really need another?

500 Grains, yeah but how many of the 40s on your list fit into a standard Mauser action? The 416 Taylor from what I've read will fit but of the others I am less sure.

The Mod-70 action can handle any 375 based cartridge up to 3.85"s. So I think this "fits a standard" action argument is a non-argument. I don't want a super light 458, 400 or 375 light weight tifle anyway.

You forgot the 416 WTHBY, probably one of the better Weatherby callibers, especially when teamed up with Barnes X.
