Near perfect, what a classic rifle should look like. Love the open grip, drop at heel, short forearm.

Very nice, but the first scratch would have to be followed by a ritual suicide.

Westley Richard's makes a stunningly handsome gun. It would be my guess that every facet of that gun is variable based on the desires of whomever commissioned the work.

This way or that way, they still build a beautiful gun. The first Westley I bought was built around 1845-1850. The metalwork was remarkable, as was the technology. The gun had been restocked in India and it (the stock) was less remarkable.

Thanks for the picture.

Brian

Bent, I agree with you about the sights and scope mount, but I like just about everything concerning the stock geometry.

Stunning. Agree about first scratch-ritual suicide. The rifle appears to be built on a military action though, judging by the thumb cutout at the clip guide. Wonder which action.

Price tag reads about 25000 USD. OK; but how they can charge 15K just for the action, without the safety, trigger and scopemount is somewhat curious to me. 15K for reworking an old Mauser action?

Bent,
What don't you like about the fore sight?
Whilst I'm not shure, it's difficult to tell from the photograph, I think the fore sight is one of the pivoting fold back type.
Right or wrong it's a great rifle.
The Lux model is beyond my little grasp of the language to do it justice
Thanks for posting the pictures.

Two beautiful works of art!!!!!

Both over my budget but I can still admire the work.

I alkso agree with the scope mounts and the front sight. I'd opt for something different.

The foresight is the patented hinged variety they use on all their best guns. The scope mounts are Holland & Holland and appear on most best English guns.

Isn't the scope mount a H&H clone? If it is, there is NOTHING made that will come close to repeatability in a quick detatchable mount. It is low and sturdy. What do you NOT like about it.

What I do not like is this: This looks, splendid, yea? It really does. And that is the problem, this pick have been set up to look as good as possible. That is a Smith&Bender scope with anormal eye-relief of about 3,5". If this scope was plased to fit its shooter , A;How would it look, B;Could it even been placed to fit the shooter? That scope needs to come foreward at least 1,5". Besides, I really do not think it looks very good, and that is what I do not like about the front sight too. It is really not as gracefull as what is delivered from NECC. But hey, that is just MY opinion.

Bent, it looks to me like there is some room to move that scope forward within the rings, although it won't be as visually balanced. It would be more flexible if the front mount were on the receiver ring, at least in terms of a more forward mounting. As for the front sights,I agree with you, there are better looking front sights and besides they look quite small and probably hard to pick up.

IMHO There is nothing made in Europe that can not be made better in the USA and for much less. When I go to SCI, Reno, I am amazed at the prices some European manufacturers charge for their offerings. Then I go to the Custom Gunmakers Guild show and see real quality work for similar goods and the price is so much easier on the wallet.

I've looked at that pic before, its a really nice rifle. I keep saying I'm going to try to build a pattern as close to that as I can, but haven't got around to it.

I cut and pasted it and drew some lines to try to figure out how much drop at the heel, nose and leading edge to grip cap and etc. But not real sure of some of the meauserments.

Best guess its about 1/2" drop at the nose, 1 1/2 at the heel, not sure the rest. Would guess it to be about 5 1/2 at the butt, not sure how wide.

Also thought the distance from the forend to the bb swivel was interesting, if I mounted one out that far everybody would tell me I mounted it out to far, but really looks nice on that gun

I would guess it to be about a 9 1/2" forearm also.

Really nice pice of wood.

US$75k for the Lux model.
Ive tried, but I cannot reach that figure with the WR BoltGun Builder:

http://www.westleyrichards.com/gun/new_build_bolt_1.html

Best I could do was BP16,060(US$30,470.)without engraving option.
Does that mean the engraving shown is BP23,476/US$44530 ??

Yes,that Std.Grade WR-M98 is a fine looking rig.

Some funny stuff here.
Theese picks were downloaded from WR's homepage 2 years ago.The shop chart did not exist then, they only differed on Standard and Lux. I may remember wrong, but I think the Lux version on the pick above is somewhat "more" than an average DeLux rifle on todays shop-shart. Think about it, they charge 7750BP for a reworked old M98, but, only 2950BP for their DeLux engraving? bewildered

I will contact my friend at Purdey's and ask what engraving like the Lux above costs.
