Varmint 470 Capstick Loads?? Login/Join

The 470 Capstick looks like quite a versatile cartridge to load. Has anyone tried some "varmint loads" with the lighter pistol bullets in the round. I've been offered a 470 capstick. Now Most of my bigbore shooting is done on paper or the local feral goat population so I figure that a hornady XTP bullet should be able to be pushed to around 3,000 fps for some explosive performance. Most of these goats only get around to 50kg in size so light bullet weight aren't a problem. I normally pop them off with my 220 swift or more recently 375HH but why not with a 470 cal bullet I reckon!

my 470 AR is only a slightly larger case, but fits in a standard length action, so it all works the same.

my plicking load is the 400gr speer gold dot pistol bullet, going nearly 2600, using h320 or i4895...

i need to load up some of the barnes X pistol bullets, as boomie sent me some to try, and I just haven't gotten to it.

I loaded some Hornady 400gr XTPs with some H4198 for about 1800fps. They shot quite well and grouped good. I don't remember the load now. But I did have a problem with the pistol bullets and the Redding seating die. More often than not, the case mouth would crumple when seating these bullets. I did not have this problem with Woodleighs or Swift A-frames.

If crumpling case mouths are a problem, I wonder if you could pick up a case mouth belling die used for reloading revolvers and bell the case mouths on your rifle cases? A straight walled rifle case like a 470 Capstick should reload like a straight walled revolver case shouldn't?

The Redding die set includes an mouth expander die, just like for straight wall pistol cases. I tried increasing and decreasing the amount of bell on the mouth, but no help. I found that if I used the expander die to start pushing the bullet into the case mouth, then I could use the seating die to set the correct depth. I had very few problem with this method, but it adds an extra step.

Since the smallest varmits I hunt are PAC elephants and crop raiding/man killing buff, the 500 grainers work just fine.
