Bitterroot585 AHR in production

gumboot458..........That cartridge is belted isn,t it ???? is there a pic of it..?????
.If it can,t be grown , its gotta be mined ....
29 March 2007, 09:27
KynochDo you have the equivalent of 577 nitro loads worked out for this cartridge as well? Something on the order of 750gr at 1900-2050FPS or perhaps a 650 Woodleigh BPE bullet in the 1600-1800 range. The latter for stateside use. Thanks!

bigdoggy700What is the cost of a basic 585 rifle?
29 March 2007, 19:09
Bitterrootgumboot, yes the cartridge is belted. I'd like to post a picture, but haven't figured out how to do it. I need help.
29 March 2007, 19:11
BitterrootKynoch, we will be doing more load evaluation soon. I will update as it progresses.
29 March 2007, 19:13
Bitterrootbigdoggy, go to the "rifles" page of our website. All prices are posted there.
29 March 2007, 19:16
Bitterrootbigdoggy, click on the "550 DGR" heading for the price once you are to the "rifles" page.

RobgunbuilderI believe this is the .600OK-1 case necked down to .585. Both Fritz 454 and I have done similar .585's probably some shoulder dimensional differences and maybe some minor neck changes to correct the NYATI flaws. No mater how you look at it, its a better design than the %$#@* NYATI.-Rob

GeorgeSHaving fired Saeed's .577 T-Rex, I'd like to congratulate anyone who fires his .585 more than twice a day.
George
30 March 2007, 08:12
KynochThanks Bitteroot. How heavy can you build the 585?
30 March 2007, 08:59
475GuyYo, George, they got a video of you shooting it?

fritz454Rob, the version I did was to simply neck down the 600OK case for a .585 bullet. Using a one diameter neck length and a 40° shoulder.
The single stack from AHR makes switching the 600 OK versions easy. Change barrels and feeding is no issue. From 416 to 620 dia.
George, The 600 and all it's varients are really not too bad to shoot provided you keep velocity 1-200 fps below max. All who have tried it are surprised. The 600 Ok (14 lb) with 900 gr bullet @ 2250 is less felt recoil than a 9.5 lb 458 Lott. However at 2400 it is simply insane
30 March 2007, 18:46
GeorgeS475Guy,
Yes, Saeed took video of me shooting it, and he is sending me the clip. It didn't hurt, but let's just say there were a lot of sensory stimuli present shooting that thing indoors!

fritz454,
I'm sure you're correct. Unfortunately, everybody hands me full-power loads. Neal did it with his .550 Magnum, and Saeed's loads are hotter than the published A-Square loads.

George
30 March 2007, 18:55
BitterrootKynoch, we can build it +/- 15 lbs. depending on wood, barrell length etc.
GeorgeS, I have extended shooting sessions on the 600 OK when sighting in and testing new loads. Keep the velocity around 2,200 and it's sweet. Oh yea, use a brake also.
I will try to get some pictures up today of the 585 and 700.
30 March 2007, 20:43
bigdoggy700Bitteroot,
When is the AHR site going to show the 600 OK cartridge and the 700 AHR cartridge? The 600 is more popular than some of the smaller calibers, and yet , very little info on the entire site about the 600 ammo.
30 March 2007, 20:44
bigdoggy700I also forgot to ask, how is my full power 600 OK solid rounds at 2400 ft/sec comming along? thanks
30 March 2007, 20:59
Bitterrootbigdoggy, we are in the process of redesigning the website. We have so much new stuff to put on there. It just takes time. I'll talk to Ed about your full power loads.

..Ye Haw !!!!!!!!

Are there any of the Ultra Large Bore ,,Owner / Operators in Alaska that any one knows of ..I,de hate to have to make a trip to America just to shoot a rifle .....

Very nice pics....The 585 is moveing onto the short list...

.If it can,t be grown , its gotta be mined ....
30 March 2007, 22:09
BitterrootThank you 366torque for posting the pictures. I'll figure out how to do it some day.
The cartridges are: 700 AHR, 600 OK, 585 AHR with 750g Barnes x, and the dinky 45-70 for comparison.
The rifle is a 600OK on a GMA action with the Leopold long eye relief scope and our quarter rib. You can shoot with both eyes open using this scope location. This rifle weighs 15 1/2 lbs and is a delight to shoot.
30 March 2007, 22:15
500grainsI think I would still be worried about that scope hitting me in the forehead.

The saga of BORE ENVY continues.

BitterrootSAFARIKID, if I had to choose between the 585 and the 600, I'd go for the 585. I've got to work out some loads, but it ought to shoot pretty flat. That x bullet wil be devastating. The ones I made for the 600 really blew things up also. It just looks cool too. I'm building one now on a GMA that will look just like the one in the picture. Can't wait to break it in.
31 March 2007, 08:36
bigdoggy700Bitteroot,
Is the 600 OK 900 grain bullet, seated that much deeper than the 1000 grain bullet on the 700 AHR?? In the picture, the 1000 grain bullet looks ALOT bigger than the 900 grain. Look like it is 200 or 300 grains heavier, just going by the picture. Why such a difference in the picture?? thanks
31 March 2007, 08:53
Bitterrootbigdoggy, that (bullet) in the 700 is not real. This cartridge is our mock-up. A real 700 bullet would be more in proportion to the 600. I'm only concerned with case dimensions with this mock-up. The bullet that is holding up the 585 case in the picture is a 1000g expanding solid copper.
31 March 2007, 09:03
SAFARIKIDYes,I have been waiting Impatiently

for months for some 900gr X bullets for THOR!(How much longer?)I will want the same for "Pondoro",my 700 fer sure! I know what that design can do in a all copper expandoing petal bullet!Devastaing on Buff and Hippo!I will think about a 585 also? Thanks!

For those who don't know how to post pictures.
You need to put a front and ending image tag around the URL of the picture.
[ the left square bracket followed by IMG then the right square bracket ],[ IMG ] but no spaces. type the address of the pic,
http://www.lsstuff.com/howdah/pics/howdah2/577howda001.jpgThe end starts with the square bracket [ then a back slash / with IMG and the right square bracket ] [ /IMG ] , again no spaces.
With all of it put together then the picture shows up in the post.
If that's not clear, then hit the reply with quote and look at the text of where a picture is at. Hopefully that should make it clearer.
The image does need to be on the web someplace.
To keep it on topic, those are big bore double pistols, the small one on top is a 577 and the bottom is a 70 cal.

dakota45056Bitteroot,
Are any of the .585 being built on a CZ action? Mine is one of the GMA actions. Just wondering and curious about the strength of the action with all the metal removal to fit the .585 dia.
Dak
Ed sent specs on the 700, looks great!!
03 April 2007, 22:50
BitterrootDAK, we will build the 585 on both the CZ and GMA actions. We have been building the 600 on the CZ for years and they have basically the same case. Very little metal removal is required to fit these cartridges in either action. The GMA is a superior action, no doubt. They are hand made, one at a time.
