Good evening all.

Oh, my first big bore, a 458 Win.Mag, have been tested out. Winchester 500 gr. loads.
Oh, I am no expert in these big calibers, but so far I am feeling good. It is NOT as bad as I had in mind.
It is producing a heavy recoil, but not a hard and painful one.

But, I like to have a scope on it, for longer rage shot and so.

Witch scope to go for?
Witch one can take the heavy recoil and at the same have a eye relief that keeps the scope away my eyebrows....??

A good weekend to you all.

Happy hunting.

One of mine I have a trijicon on and the other a Leupold. Both offer ample eye relief and are able to withstand the recoil.

I have never seen any animal that required the use of a 458 that needed to be magnified more than 2 1/2 X

For another option....you might consider a Red Dot. When my eyes reached the point that I couldn't achieve the kind of precision from my .458 that I knew she was able to deliver...I tried a scope for a while, and it worked fine..2.5x is plenty.
Over time however, I eventually pulled it and installed a Red Dot. It was kind of an experiment at first. I've never taken a shot at a live critter with my .458 over 50 yds., and don't intend to. I like the red dot much better than the scope.

A 458 is designed for a specific use, killing big bad critters at under 100 yards..I see no use for any scope over the 3X Leupold, that happens to be my favorite, but the 2.5X Leupold compact is a tougher scope for sure and thats a real benifit..

That said, I would as soon have or actually prefer a good set or irons or a receiver sight with the disc taken out of it on a .458 Win.

We have two .416 Remington's and three .375H&H's with Leupold VX-1 variable scopes, all performing as required. The 2x7 models provide the field of view required for close shots and instant capability to increase magnification if a better look or longer shot is required.

Leupold has a good reputation for recoil durability, value pricing, and, I can see well through the less than costly lens. Other makers probably have comparable products and value.

Save yourself a lot of grief and money and just buy a Lepold 2.5X compact. It wont break.
alternatively consider a red dot.
Your not going to be shooting more than 50 yards and a good red dot will also not fail.-Rob

I might be a bit of an oddball, but I have a Leupold 2.5-8 VX-3 Boone and Crockett reticle on mine. I've tried lower powered variables and the little 2.5 X compact and don't care for them. I can use a 1.75-6 but see no advantage in doing so.

With my load of a 450 grain A-Frame at 2350 fps I sight-in 2 inches high at 100 and hit 4 inches low at 200. The 2 inches at 100 yards doesn't bother me in the slightest, and the 1 inch that it hits high at 50 even less. At 25 it's bang on.

Even the apparent mismatch of the B&C reticle has its uses. Cranked right up to full power I can use the aiming points at 150, 200, 250 and 300 yards. Haven't used that capability in the field, but it does work when playing.

I have observed on several ocassions wherein folks had the varible on a high power and couldn't find the target that was coming after them in which case the PH had to step in...It happens more often that one would think when the hunter is under pressure, especially those who mistakenly believe that more power makes one a better shot which is a false therory..I also understand that those with enough experience may not have this problem.

I like a fixed scope on a DGR, and I still believe that a fixed power is tougher than a varible.

but to each his own, I only speak for myself.

When my 458 is scoped I use the 2.5x fixed Leupold. What Phil mentioned in his above post I have found to be true, I am 56 years old and with heavy duplex can shoot 6 inch groups at 300 yds, plenty of accuracy with a big bore rifle. The eye relief is so generous that I can shoot my rifle in a prone position.

You didn't state what your budget was. If cost is not too important, check out the Swarovski Z6i 1.7x10 scope. I like the CDi reticle in it, but that is just my preference.

If you plan to use the rifle for anything in low light, the illuminated reticle is very, VERY nice. We've done some testing with it, and for most people, it is the one thing you can do to improve your chances on failing light shots.

The scope itself is very nice also, great glass, with magnification range that makes sense for hunting, rather than paper punching. At the lowest setting, you should be OK hunting DG with it. For some older hunters, the addition of a low powered scope extends the years they can hunt, after iron sights become difficult.

Hello and thank you all for lot of feed back.
Sorry for my late reply back Roll Eyes

Well, I am sure the Swarovski is a great scope, but not the one I seek for my 458.
As Phil sad, I feel a 2-3* scope is more what I need.

Think it will be a Leupold scope.

THe rifle also have express sights, one standing for 50 meters, the one I will be using.

Will try and post photos next week.

Good afternoon all.

Happy hunting.

I have a Leupold 1.5x5 on my #1 .458 and can't shoot it above about 3x without fear of getting bit. Also had the power selector lock up on it after maybe 100 rounds. Leupold fixed it but if I were doing it again I think I would go with the fixed 2.5x.

If you want the perfect fixed power scope for a hard kicking, magnum caliber and action then Leupold has the perfect scope! They started making the original 3X in the full length tube for SWFA (WWW.SWFA.com) for about $345 and it will bridge the longest gap. Great scope!

Which game animal that is bad enough to require
.458 Win Mag power is appropriately fired upon
at such a distance? Are you referring to one that's
been poorly hit already, and must be stopped by
Howitzer if available?

Do not use any "turn in" mount.

Weaver steel crosslock bases and rings are ugly and bulletproof. Use red Locktite.

Always carry a spare sighted in scope and rings.

I have trashed a dozen or so scopes on big bores over the years, most go out around 250 to 300 rounds, some at 10 to 20 rounds..

Scopes start giving up the ghost at the 458 Lott and up..I have never had a scope fail on a 375,416 Rem, or 404. I don't recall a failure on a 458 Win??...The Lott left me with a box full of return to maker scopes..The worst offenders were the high dollar European scopes and that was because of inertia and heavy weight I am sure.
The only scope I trust on the Lott and up is the Leupold 2.5x compact as it has the adjustments under the turrets, and has proven itself admirably.

That said, I see little reason to scope a rifle intended for 50 yard shots, with a rare 100 yard shot needed..A good receiver sight is probably the best for me, but shallow V sights are fine.

The thought of a scope on a charging animal at 25 to 0 yards is scary, in that a scope is 1 to 1.5 inches above the bore line and will shoot low and when you add that to the distance changing to closer in mini-seconds your in trouble..I have seen hunters try to put in a coupe de Grace at 15 or 20 yards and shoot low and hit the dirt below the animal on more than a few ocassions. Their guns shot an inch or two below the cross hair..I have seen the results of chages and seen those low bullet holes in the animal that in some cases did no good at all.

Just food for thought if your interested, as I have never seen this discussed on these blogs, and thought it may be helpfull or even life saving to someone..

I have a Ruger #1 model, and used to have a Leupold 3-9x on it, until not having my butt supported properly caused the scope and my nose to make contact. That was very unpleasant - think of being punched in the face by Mike Tyson. I saw stars, saw double, and was bleeding for a half hour afterward. It now sports a 2-6x Burris shotgun scope and is still quite accurate.

Eye relief is key with the big boomers!

In one 18 month period I sent 13 Leupold scopes back for repair. Most of these were 1.5X5 Vari and VX 3s, 1x4 VX 2s, I only owned one 2.5 Compact that has been declared indestructable, at least until the cross hairs on mine fell apart, not to mention the fact that it has a terrible field of view compared to the other models. At one time I ALWAYS had 2-4 scopes at Leupold, and 2-4 on the bench to be sent. I sold 30+ Leupolds at 1/2 price, replaced all of them with Nikon 1X4s, and other Nikon Models. I have run Nikons now over two years since the first one, it is still going strong, and I have yet to have a busted Nikon. Use what you wish based on ego or price, I can't afford so much aggravation and down time from test work or field work, so I use what works.........

I prefer the more rugged fixed power scopes on a 458, but currently mine has a Leupold 1-4 on it. So far it's held up well but it doesn't get shot very much. At one time the eye Dr. said I was on the verge of a detached retina from shooting it too much. Be careful, if you have any eye pain or start seeing black floaters, back off.
