Any reason not to reload 400 gr. Hornady bullets meant for the 480/475 pistols? The bore dia. is, obviously, .475 vs .474 of my Merkel. Any good loads you all can recommend? Thanks.

No reason not to use them. Don't have a regulation load yet, but plan to try xp5744 from Accurate. One of the guys posted some loads with it. Do a search on old forum or contact .450@2Nitro. He wrote me about using that powder, but couldn't find any at the time. Meanwhile spent a month in Zim and forgot about it and it's too cold now, next spring

I am planning on trying them in mike's 470 mbogo... can't see what that wouldn't be a GREAT pig round... or, in other words, the BT of the .475 bullets

If I was going to use the Hornady bullets I would want to keep the velocity down so the bullets did not "explode" on impact. I would use Nitro for Black loading techniques.
I would start with @50 grains of IMR 4198 and @15grains of poly filler. Velocity should be around 1800 to 1900 fps. Work up till the bullets hit with the sights.

I loaded them for my 470 Capstick. If driven over 2000 fps they blow up. I use them for target practice. The Speer Gold Dot are tougher but can not be driven to max speeds-- can get about 2700fps max.

I use 62.0 grains of H4198 with 8 grains of Dacron pillow stuffing over it. In my Ruger #1 conversion, these shoot to the same point of impact at 100 yards as the full load 500 grain bullets.

I used some 400 grain Barnes pistol bullets in a 470 nitro. They regulated at 55 or 60 grains of XMP5744.

I also used both Speer and Hornady 400 grain .475" pistol bullets in my 470 capstick. They shoot ok but hit about a foot higher than my 500 grain load.

Hi Jeffe,
Let me know what loads you end up with with Mike's 470 Mbogo. Don't drive them too hard or you'll melt them down.
Take good care and Happy New Year

Good to see you on the new forums Dave! Are you playin' hooky today? Wink

If you have trouble with your avatar its probably got something to do with it being on imagestation. I have been having problems with imagestation and Don is working on it. You can load your avatar right on to this website, however.

Still haven't crossed paths with Chris. Just his answering machine.

Cheers,
Canuck
