Hi to all, This is my first post. In a magazine article I read that 1 of the best brown bear loads was a 300 barnes x @ 2800 fps from a 416 rem mag. If this true what do you all think of loading a 458 lott with 300 gn barnes x @ 2800 fps for brown bear? I have a 375 h&h mag on a m70 win so it could be a 458 lott with a barrel change. My experience with DG is nil so looking for some advise.

Welcome to AR. Rounds like the .458 Lott are designed to deliver heavy bullets at (relatively) high velocities. Using a very light-for-caliber bullet robs you of the sectional density needed for deep penetration. If a brown bear hunt is in your future, your .375 with 300gr. Swift A-Frames, or other controlled-expansion bullet will be easier to carry, easier to shoot well, and quite adequate for the job. George

GeorgeS, you are throwing that common sense thing in here again, aren't you? If his gunsmith is good, he can switch the barrels in a couple of minutes. You know, deep down in your soul, that having a Lott validates you as a big bore shooter much better than a puny little 375...? Rich

Yes, of course. That's why I have a .470 Capstick, instead of a pipsqueak .458 Lott! George

Geeze! I get my Lott up and running just in time to find that it's been down graded from popgun to pipsqueak!

Personally I think the 400 gr @ 2400 fps is the perfect Lott combo for big bears. You have sufficient bullet weight, velocity and trajectory. While a 300 gr @ 2800 might just be the most devastating killer on the perfect broadside shot, it just might not have sufficient penetration for a heavily quartering shot. I believe a load should be balanced for all shooting situations, and work well in all situations. It would more then suck to shell out $15k for a bear hunt, have a once in a lifetime trophy, take the only shot offered, quatering away, and have the bear get away and die a lingering death because you didn't have the proper load for the job. You don't get a 458 lott for shooting 300 gr bullets. __________________________________________________ The AR series of rounds, ridding the world of 7mm rem mags, one gun at a time.

I'll second Paul H although the 300 gr X should penetrate just fine. Anyone who claims the 30-06 is ineffective has either not tried one, or is unwittingly commenting on their own marksmanship Phil Shoemaker Alaska Master guide FAA Master pilot NRA Benefactor www.grizzlyskinsofalaska.com
