Jeff,

I have some starter loads made up with 67gr of Rel 7 and a 405 Rem. My research suggests that Rel 7 may well be the cat's meow for these lighter projectiles. We shall see.

Here she is! Took it out this afternoon, boy does she kick!!! She weighs in at 8 lbs even. I was shooting 405gr Rem over 67 abnd 69 grains of Rel 7. After getting her zeroed manage a 1.5" center to center 10 shot group at 100 yards off the bags! I am very happy!!! I just wish my head and shoulder didn't hurt so much. Did I mention how hard this thing KICKS!

Barrel is 22.5" long, it is a Ruger M77 mkII that has been rebarreled.

maybe because you build it waaaaay to light.
8lbs would be suitable for a .338wm or a 9.3x62.

if i were to build a .458, it would weigh 9.5lbs

Come on scott, nice looking useful rig... zero resale, but hey, that's now why we build them,

2.5lbs for the action
lam stock, at least 2.5 lbs
about 3 for the barrel
another lbs for the scope and rings
looks like a decelerator pad.. change to a limbsaver and pick up 3-4 oz

TAKE THE SLING SWIVLE OUT OF THE FOREEND
9-9.3

that looks just around right, in terms of weight.. Rob's 458 LOTT CZ doublerifle weight 8.25

9.5? for a winmag? before glass? thats TOO HEAVY

seriously, an 8# bare winmag should be a little exciting.. but that's NEARLY the same weight as my 500 AR on a ruger.. and close on my 470.

Load the rounds down and get it off the bench..

GET THE SLING SWIVLE OUT OF THE STOCK before it winds up in your hand

Jeff,

My bad. The bare rifle weighs just at 8lbs on my scale. With the scope mounted it is just under 9 lbs. I plan on taking it out again today and shooting some of the loads I have left over from yesterday across the chronograph to see what kinda velocities I am getting. The 67 and 69 grains of Rel7 loads I shot yesterday looked pretty mild pressure sign wise. I can tell you this much, it kicks a heckofalot more than my 405 Win or the 50 Beowulf do!!

Scott,
please move the scope as far forward as possible.. looks like you can go at least anothe 1/2 inch forward,, and on a light gun, .. well, take super glue with you every time to the range.

you should be around 2450 with these loads.. grenades on animals, and if you back down to 2200, it would be much better, all the way around...

seriously, the front sling stud.. its got to go

I second that! If you move it up to the tip of the stock it will save your hand (Quick and easy) if you don't want to do a barrel band.

Jeff,

I'll get the sling stud moved, perhaps as Blacktailer suggest (I am envisioning the shotgun style here). If I move the scope any farther forward I have a hard time seeing through it.

Thanks for all the advise.

I think I figured out some of the recoil this afternoon. I chronographed some loads (these were 70gr of Rel7) and the avg was 2465 fps with the highest just over 2500 fps!! Still no pressure signs, but I am thinking that these kinda velocities are bit over the top. So I will definitely be stoking this down a bit, I am thinking something like 64 to 65 gr MAX.

Will someone please ban this damn idiot before his loads end up killing someone who hasn't read his garbage for the last few years.

Again we see this jackass lying through his teeth as I have quoted him below. Here is what he had to say 03-24-2004 at 2:16am. Please keep in mind that in the current post about his 458, he states that he has never shot a 50 cal and can't imagine the recoil. This guy needs banned before someone gets hurt listening to his bullshit.

I owned a 500 A Square, have you? I know what it can really do, and I know how much marketing hype A Square generated about it. My rifle had a 27" barrel too. Hey want to talk 500 Jeffery, 500 AHR, or 505 Gibbs. I have owned two out of three of those and loaded for all of them! Sorry Jeff, but unlike you I am not a newbie to big bores, and the ability so simply screw a prefabricated barrel into an action, as well as dropping a barreled action into a prefitted stock doesn't impress me a whole hellaluvalot! But hey, you can call me whatever you like.

here is the link to his entire post. Be aware that he has been going back and deleting many of his old posts trying to cover his lies.

You guys are a rough crowd. I have read several post of Scotts and I agree he is off base a lot of the time, but I don't think the 458 looks bad at all. Just my opinion. Those velocities for the 458 do seem ridiculously high.

2500fps is way to high with 405's. Its not even worth running the numbers. Typical Scotts Turd polish! Totally predictable.-rob

Jeff,

When I ran the 70gr Rel 7 with 405 Rem in Quickload (adjusted to my measured muzzle velocity) it predicted a chamber pressure of 74 ksi!!! Now I consider 65gr to be MAX. I really didn't think that load would have been so hot since my Lyman manual shows 65gr of Rel7 for a 500gr pill. Seems this rifle may run fast. Next I am going to try some 400gr Woodleigh PSP. I will report out what I get.

when did YOU get quickload? you had always stated you had your own (self written?) software, not quickload...

you don't "adjust for mv.. you put the load in and with a little experience, find out that ANY near 2150 load for the 458 winmag reads in the high 70s...

quickload is USELESS for straight cases...

Jeff,

I have had Quickload for a couple of years. I did not realize that it was useless for straight walled cases. I have found that with many many powders it is 100 to 150 fps too fast in velocity predictions, those were with bottle necked cases.

Rob,
Quickload has been within 15 fps of 30-06 loads with IMR 4350! Now that is what I call awesome accurate. I find Quickload to be very accurate with it's predictions when using IMR4350. I also agree that the 67 through 70 gr Rel 7 loads with the 405 gr Remingtons were WAY THE HELL over the top. Do you have any load data you would like to share? There is precious little out there for the 405gr Remington and any of the Woodleighs.

Absolutely no data on 405gr bullets. The data I have is limited to 500gr bullets. In a M98 based .458win mag with 1:14 twist 26 inch lilja barrel, my best load was 80gr of WW748 with a 500gr Hornady softpoint, fed 215 primer and crimped. Velocity was 2125fps. It was extremely accurate though. Case was reloaded 5 times and primer pocket stayed tight. Good enough for me. -Rob
