Thanks Professor!

Y'all Give Harry McGowen a few days to get finished with the holiday season and then call him or write him to express interest in the .395 barrels:

Phone: 815-937-9816
Fax: 815-937-4024
There are plenty of ways to look him up on the internet but he does not have a web site, nor e-mail that I have used. I talk to him on the phone, and write.
I see that he is listed as an "EXPORTER" on one internet listing. I'll be talking to him about that.

Charles_HelmDon't forget to add the cost of a reamer. Do full drawings exist for the .395 GSC from which a reamer can be made? Are we talking just a .375 H&H rebarrel? [I know, "just" is a bit of a stretch.] What is the .395 RUM called -- I have lost track.
30 December 2006, 11:18
boom stickrip...would not the sp's work from the magazine in a 375 h+h action using the 375 ruger case???

nobody has "claimed" it yet...
395 helm sounds good...
or maybe that is a better case to be named the 395 texas heart shot

GerardFor comparison: A .395" 340gr HV in a 375H&H case, 338WM with 232gr SP, 8x68S with 160gr HV. Chamber reamer drawing for the 395GSC will be available early January.

RIPThanks Gerard.

Beautiful.

Gerard,
It will be very interesting to see how you throat the .395 GSC.
I will follow with a reamer for the .395 Tatanka (.398 Lapua Magnum) done by Dave Manson, as soon as I have some sample bullets to make dummies and measure necks.

boom stick,
Sure, the SP will work through the box of an H&H length rifle in .395 Ruger. But might as well get the greater capacity of the .395 GSC and single-shot load them to longer length. The HV and FN when seated to first band will work in the H&H box for the .395 GSC, or in the shorter box with the .395 Ruger. I would certainly prefer the .395 GSC (H&H Improved) over the .395 RUM, but I am set on the .395/.338 Lapua Magnum.
Gerard is the genius who came up with the .395 GSC, and I just might have to do that one while waiting for Stuart Satterlee to get the Tatanka action made.
I have a CZ 550 AHR action that is temporarily housing a .375 RUM with occasional failure to pick up the rebated rim. It has the standard .375 H&H box by CZ. I think the .395 GSC would solve that feeding problem. It has a 3.8" long box so the HV seated as Gerard has shown will work through the box. It holds 4 RUMs in the box with room to spare, and should hold 5 of the .395 GSC down in the box.
The .395 GSC will be a straightforward rebarrel of the CZ 550 Magnum in .375 H&H, with lots of firepower.
30 December 2006, 20:44
Charles_HelmThanks Gerard -- any guesses on whether this is a rebarrel for a .375-length action or if serious magazine/feeding work would be required?
Probably simpler to do something on a standard length action.
Mayeb I should go back to the 10.75x68 idea.

30 December 2006, 21:02
GerardRIP,
Your prototypes for measurement will leave next week. They will not be moly coated.
Charles,
I am aiming to keep it as simple as possible as a conversion from 375H&H. At worst, the slightly fatter improved case may need a bit of work on the forward inside edges of the action. As soon as I have done the reamer drawing, I want to turn a couple of solid brass dummies for checking feeding.
Have a pleasant intro to the new year and I wish everyone the very best for 2007. I have just shut off the last machine and will not be coming to the factory till next year.

30 December 2006, 21:06
RIPThanks, again, Gerard.

BTW, it looks like you are not finished blowing out the shoulder on that .395 GSC prototype dummy, eh?
I'll get your .395 GSC reamer made up by Dave Manson.

boom stickthanks gerard...
seeing those dummies is better than the best champage i could ever toast

rip...it seems to me that the ruger case in the longer action is one hell of a way to go with versatility...thanks for the confirmation

charles...do the 338 rum version...the 338 rum is .1" shorter than the other rums so feeding will be better...398 rumhelm!
its going to be a fun new year here on a.r.

Let Donald do it -- the .395 RUMs-Feld.

prof242With the two actions I have available to rebarrel, I'm torn between the .395GSC on the Rem 700, and the .397Ruger on a std action! The doctor told me to keep my stress level down. Now see what you guys have done.

It occurs to me that I have this wrong. It should be the .395 RUMs-Veldt. I realize that .395 Bushveldt might be a more popular choice, but that would leave out the (other) Donald.
My Afrikaans is a bit weak (okay it is almost nonexistent) so if the preferred spelling omits the final "t" so be it.

so right now its just a necked up 375 h+h?
the bigger bore should be pushing the same weight faster so a more efficient result...
are you going to do just a neck/throat reamer to easily convert 375's?

do the gsc...you will have to ask gerard for the reamer and maybe split the cost...
if you decide the 395 ruger version on the 700 you could magazine feed the longer sp's ...
or do the 395 rum!...that will be the cheapest max range and power

RIPboom stick,
Calm down. I may have to fire you from the position of PR Man for the .395 caliber if you get any goofier. Or we could consider a combination of lithium and Thorazine, then electroconvulsive therapy if that doesn't work, then a frontal lobotomy if that doesn't work ... or just go pour yourself a brandy in that big ol' snifter.
Still got the picture of you in the red velvet robe, contemplating your cigar?

Now Now RIP! It's not everyday a man get's to play with a wildcat, even rarer a new bullet!! He'll be perfect when you need him.

.366torqueAs for me, the long range GSC's look perfect for fun! I've desired a long range paper puncher for a while.

torque...
get another 416 rigby, sell the barrel, chamber for 398 lapua and feed the long sp's from the magazine
should be good for 1000 yard big bore shooting.
rip is making one...

RIPAhhhhh ... Old Glory rippling in the breeze.

That is a soothing and invigorating avatar there. Balm for the soul. Much better than that annoying dancing banana.
Now back to business: Got the wrong shoulder angle on that .338 Lapua Magnum. It should be 20 degrees. The .300 Lapua is 25 degrees, and that is likely the source of confusion from Stevespage.
The holiday festivity is over. Back to the grind stone. I'll get back when there are anymore new developments on the .395. Don't want to wear it out, eh?
01 January 2007, 14:58
boom stickshoulder angle aside the lapua in a 416 rigby will be a swweeeeet rig for the 395 and the long sp's
you should be getting some soon...
i'll try to keep a lid on my enthusiasm....no promises

Now I regret selling my Sako TRG-S 338 Lapua. Even worse was finding the deal of the century. A Sako TRG-S 338 Lapua with 100 brass for $750 and not buying because of other commitments. But still Damn It! I could be rebarreling to a 395 Tatanka long shooter next fall!!!

04 January 2007, 10:20
RIPTorque,
Cheer up, another will come along for the .395 Tatanka, the all purpose wonder cartridge.
Here is a look at the brass difference in the heads of three cartridges, left to right:
1. Lapua .338 Lapua Magnum
2. Norma .416 Rigby
3. BeLL .416 Rigby cylindrical basic
A .395 Tatanka case, formed from .338 Lapua Magnum necked up to .395 will last forever.

(AKA .398 Lapua until proper headstamp arrives.)
The Sako TRG, Wby Mark V, CZ 550 Magnum, BRNO ZKK 602, BBK-02, Ruger No.1, Dakota M76 African, Granite Mountain, and Brevex Mauser are possibilities. Of course the ultimate will be a Satterlee M98 Magnum in stainless.

04 January 2007, 10:28
.366torqueOK I'll bite. What are we looking at?
04 January 2007, 10:33
RIPO.K., just for you Torque, see above. Follow the thumb. Keep the faith.

great stuff!

RIPboom stick,
I just revived this at 4 AM CST on 17 Jan 2007, by starting the .395 Tatanka dummy thread. Gerard took note and posted here. You found this within 7 hours and 31 minutes of renewed .395 thread activity.
You didn't miss much. The band wagon is stalled until barrels and bullets are available. Not much to do yet. Just killing time.
