Did the original .404 Jeffery chambered rifles
(by any maker) on standard length M98 actions with Drop Box Magazines hold 3 or 4 down?

Would the 1905 model be comparable to a standard depth magazine box or a drop box?


I'm asking this because Sunny-Hill has a drop box bottom metal and it has enough material in the sides to machine it wider to make it the proper dimensions for the .404 Jeffery.
At least that's what I have been told.

Since it is a drop box magazine I am wondering if it will hold 4 down.

I don't the Mauser Formula delt with the box's side shape mostly or did it change the depth of the box over standard.

I read that it is in fact 404 Jeffery note the lack of decimal point because it was a rifle that was in the .40 caliber range and held 4 rounds hence 404. It certainly isn't a .404 bore, grooves or lands.

The Sunny Hill machined wider should hold 4 down at least, if it is a drop box or pocket-plate version.

The standard depth Winchester RUM box holds three down in 404 Jeffery.

The CZ 550 Magnum box is a drop box that is Mauser Formula perfect in widths for the 404 Jeffery, by my estimation. It holds 5 down in 404 Jeffery.

Interesting that they touted the new "flat strip cordite" as giving "20% greater velocity and striking force," and at no greater pressure than the old "Cordite."

O.K. 20% more velocity equals 20% more momentum (and 44% more energy)

Lower down on this page they warned against using 2400 fps with softpoint bullets for game, due to bullet breakup. The higher velocity was recommended for solid bullets or long range targets.

2400 fps vs 2200 fps with a 400 grainer, is only a 9.09% gain, not 20%.

2200 fps + 20% = 2640 fps with a 400 grainer from the 404 Jeffery.
Sounds like a Ray Atkinson load.

Marketing hyperbole somewhere. Things never change.

Sunny Hill bottom metal or Ted Blackburns, is only workable for the .404 Jefferys if you use the 416 box and modify it to fit the larger 404 case...It has to be widened and lengthened...Dennis Olson, Plains, Mt. does a good job of this BTW.

Uh, yeah, maybe, lessee ... 9.09% more velocity gives 19% more energy, close enough for Jefferyosso advertizing. That was undoubtedly good for some Pinky Finger Schwing in days gone by.
