The load is 79.5grains of ADI AR2209 which is close to W760/H4350 winchester brass, federal pimers,300gr woodleigh Welcore soft points and 300 hornady FMJ rifle Sako 375H&H

The second bullet was recovered from this pig

I was warned by members here not to use hornady FMJ,the hornady did the job,but as you can see are losing lead from the back and some had started to tumble inside the buffalo.

This was one of two follow up shots, this bullet reached the chest.

I have posted a report on the hunt in the Australian/NZ section

Thanks for posting the photos...like Jeffe, I too, like the pics of spent bullets.

In this case the weldcores appear to have done a decent job as a soft point for the cartridge. thumb

The Hornady solid is not known or reputed to be among the finest of solids for DG hunting but the one you show appears to have stood the trip fairly well. The small amount of lead extruded from the rear of the case doesn't bother me at all. That said, it does beg to make one wonder how much of this would have happened if it had hit serious bone such as ele skull. As a matter of fact this is the very first Hornady solid I've seen posted.

Years ago they had a steel inner jacket and I don't know if that would have made a difference. Still in this particular instance I'd say it made a decent showing considering it's reputation as a second class solid.

What a shame! Hornady went from producing one of the finest steel jacketed FMJ bullets to one of the worst, the encapsulated bullet.

top_predator,

Is that one of the older Hornady FMJ's or the newer? The older are steel jackets with copper coating and the newer are a hardened brass type of jacket.

Does that mean that Woodleigh is selling illegal bullets since their's are steel jacketed. Also you can buy steel jacketed 308 and 30-06 ammo any day of the week.

Jeff

I have read the regs many times and I have never seen any such reg that pertains to steel jacketed solid bullets made for rifles, especially for sporting rifles. They may get a little testy about doing the same for pistol bullets but, even there, it does not specifically state anything about steel jacketed pistol bullets IF the jacket does not exceed 25% of the bullet weight. Steel cores; now that's a whole other matter. Besides, all references to "armour piercing" have nothing to do with what the man on the street considers armour piercing, i.e., going through "stuff" (buildings, cars, or other hardened objects). Armour piercing specifically refers to, and is limited to, bullets that can be loaded into hand guns and have the actual or potential ability to penetrate law enforcement type body armour. They are very specific in their list of what is acceptable and what is not. If Hornaday told you that was the reason they quit making steel jacketed rifle bullets, they are blowing smoke up your ass.

Wow!! I love to see recovered bullets, however, they always make me wonder what I am doing wrong, because the only recovery I've ever had was with a .38-55 thirty years ago!! Since then I've used 6.5mms, 7mms, .270, and .30-06s and never had a bullet recovered, including shooting Kudu, Gemsbok, and Wildebeest in Africa. Noslers, RWS H-Mantles, Hornaday, Sierra, Norma, even Remington CoreLokts just zip right on thru. Maybe deer/plains game is not tough enough, I don't know.

Hornady quit making the steel inner jacket bullets because the material they used for it was no longer available to them. It was a steel and copper bonded sheet that they used to make jackets.

It cost them a bundle to totally reengineer and retool the three FMJs in .375, 416, and 458
