Just got a 416 remington on a pre 64 winchester action. What are your pet loads ie powder and bullets?? Got 50 rounds of reloads with the rifle that are 350 grain over reloder 15.

I like 80 grain R-15 with 350 and 400 grain bullets. You can go up on each load if you want. These loads are very accurate and provide enough velocity for each bullet.

RL-15 works well, but I would hesitate stating grains.

Two of them give me 2400 fps with 400 gr. bullets at your load (80 gr.), and another gives the same velocity at 76 gr.

Still need to reduce recommended loads by 10% as a start and still need a chronograph.

I used Hornady's reloading manual, in my gun, and the STARTING load gave me 2385 with 400gr... i didn't try anything past that, it was perfect there

78 to 80 grs. of RL-15 will work in any 416 Rem I have ever owned....and it will normally shoot all weights and bullets to the same POI in my experience.....at least in my experience...My Searcy would shoot any bullet make or weight to the same POI with that load...It was an exceptional rifle...

FWIW...In mine it takes 81 grains of RE-15 to get to 2400fps. And while there is nothing magic about 2400 vs. 2350, groups shrank progressivily as I went up til I got to 81 grains. Then they seemed to start to open up again.

So 81 grains it is, in mine, but as always you just have to try what works in your rifle.

71 grains H4895 on the Rhino 400 grain soft points/solids.Same thing with 400 grain Barnes.The Rhino's shoot best in my rifle.

Max is normally 82 grs. in most 416 Rem. rifles...

I have gone considerably beyond that while experimenting without problems...when I hit a sticky bolt, extractor mark, flattened primers, I will stop and back off about 2 grs....

I also measure case head expansion and .005 is about all thats acceptable, but all my hunting loads are 0 case head expansion...Some folks say you can go beyond .005, but I won't.

I have noticed case head expansion and the other signs like sticky bolt, extractor marks and flatten primers go hand in hand..

The chronograph is a good indicator used with the above, and a big jump in velocity is usually a pretty good indicator to back off...

None of these indicators alone tell you much as too many varibles can cause them to take place, but when all are combined they give a pretty accurate picture of where you are.

My rifle doesn't appear to like Reloader 15, but it shoots Varget and IMR 4064 very well. It pays to experiment with a few powders in this cartridge, and it pays to employ a chronograph as you work up loads.

I just got back from the range this afternoon and had great luck with the Speer 350 gr MagTip over 77 gr of surplus H322. Three touching on every group. Didn't take the Chrony so I don't know where the velocity was but the primers were as flat as I will allow and the recoil was brisk.

I've been experimenting with IMR4064 with good results. I believe I'm at about 76g.

Using Reloader 15, Varget seemed to give a lot more percieved recoil

When I started on my .416 Rem I tried all the powders mentioned in any of the reloading manuals, settled on IMR 4064 and RL-15 with the later winning out in the accuracy department. Along with North Fork 370 grainers, both softs and solids, my Buffalo hunt had a happy ending and is now grandkid fodder. Good shooting.

With 400 gr bullets I use 82 gr of RL15 for solids I use 81gr of RL15 in my Rem 416.
