Yes. I've scoped .500's with good results, using Leopold's and Swarovski. Only issue I've ever encountered scoping a big bore was with a Burris that was damaged by a. 458.

I also have a scope on my 500 Schüler rifle , a 1,25-4x20 Schmidt&Bender. It's perfect for a good shot placement by elephant hunting.

I suggest that you just use a receiver sight, if you need the advantage of more range, The 500s not a long range gun and if you shoot one a lot sooner or later you will trash the scope , but if you keep it in the closet it will be fine with any scope. I like a scope but what I hunt with big bores, I place feed and function and dependability above accuracy..

If you must use a scope then the 2.5 Leupold compact is the only way to go IMO, and some others who shoot them a lot..The receiver sight gives me a 250 to 300 yard gun, that's an advantage or 150 yards more or less, but that's substantial with a 500..

I had a Leupold 4-14 B&C lying around that I tried and liked on my 30-378. First used a 1.5-5 on my Gibbs 505 and since the rifle is accurate to 300 yds I wanted more power. Both rifles have a fair amount of recoil but it's held up fine so far. Two of my S&B broke but were fixed for free. Great light gathering when it gets darker.

I'm 68, and my vision is still 20 / 25, but I really need a scope to shoot past 50 yards. I firmly believe dangerous game should be shot up close and personal, but even then unless it's a follow up in the thick stuff(which is why I have Talley QR rings), I prefer a scope. I sight my 500 Jeffery in 2.5" high at 100 yards which puts a 570g A-Frame dead on at 25 yards and dead on again at 175 yards. Besides last elk I shot with it at 225 yards did not get up.

I have scoped my Blaser R8 in 500J with my Zeiss 1.5-6 in a rail mount, not rings.

It was fine, but i did come close to getting the eyebrow trimmed , and in the heat of battle i didn't want this to happen!!!!!

i prefer shooting it with open sights better. Its good upto 100mtrs with the open sights.
Makes the gun much quicker and points better without the scope.
it is really an up close and personal calibre in my books.

I think scopes are great on a buffalo rifle, even up close, because of wanting to see through branches clearly.

I recommend the Nikon Inline 3-9. Three power is fine up close. But more importantly, the 5-inch eye-relief removes the need for double-thinking eye-relief when taking a shot. Just hold as close to normal as possible.
Rugged reliability of the Nikon is fantastic and I do not worry this scope. (Michael McCourey couldn't break a Nikon on a big bore.) I am more concerned about my stock holding up.
Clarity is Nikon excellent, price is almost unbelievably friendly.
Here is a pic with the scope on my 500 ARNyati, basically the power equivalent of the Jeffrey, 6500-7000 ft#.

Consider a trijicon red dot sight instead of a scope. Mucho faster and just as accurate.

I use a 1x optical scope mounted forward; I aim with both eyes open.
