Anyone purchase and have Shaw install a barrel for them recently? Are you happy with the outcome?

I don't know anyone who has had a big-bore Shaw barrel installed on their rifle recently.

Go with Pac-Nor or Lothar Walther.

snowolfe, i bought a used rifle a year ago and it was a winchester m70 stainless action and it has a 23 inch stainless barrel by shaw. the caliber is 458 win mag. the original owner was a bear guide so it was carried alot. i love it, and it groups 1.5moa with 450gr kodiaks at 2243fps. the finish is just like rugers stainless so its shiny but it works for me..

I'd suggest (as a reminder) that the cost of the barrel itself is only portion of a rebarrel job.

For a big bore - fitting, finishing, feeding work and sights will cost more than the barrel blank.

Spend an extra 100 and get a barrel from a maker whose reputation/quality you don't have to ask about.

I tried to get info from ER Shaw via phone call and was treated quite rudely. My barrel $$ now goes to Krieger and Lothar Walther.

I have never used them. I have also never talked to them on the phone. I did send them a long list of questions via email and they answered everyone of my questions in detail and provided info I had forgot to ask.

i used them once, about 15 years ago.. at the same time i got a douglas for IT&D..once i put the barrels on, the douglas shot better groups and had a better finish (in and out)...

for something like 20 bucks more, it's douglas for me...

fwiw, AB barrels are finished better than shaws, especially the bore

I bought a 416 RM, Winchester M70 Classic Express, Custom Shop, special run of 100 in stainless/pretty wood about four years ago. I called Winchester to verify the claims the dealer made at the time of purchase. They told me the barrel was a match grade barrel mfg. by Shaw.

I have no complaints. She shoots consistently good.

In general, Shaw has a poor reputation.

Many have good reputations: Douglas, Pac-Nor, Lilja, Krieger, Walther, etc. With all the good ones out there, why try to get lucky with a poor name barrel?

I've had about a dozen Shaw barrel put on in the last few years, and about an equal number of CM Douglas barrels during that same time, and based on this sample, I prefer the Shaws. They foul no worse than the Douglas and offer comparable accuracy, all at a lower price. Two of the Douglas barrels fouled VERY badly, one I re-barreled as it would not shoot and the other I just recently fire-lapped, which appears to have helped some. I've had some fairly quick-to-foul CM Shilens as well.

IMO, the "best buy" out there right is the $165 pac-nor CM... lapped at the factory and very good shooters (especially their 9.3mm barrels - WOW!). I've yet to own a LW, Shilen, Hart, Lilja, or Krieger that would out do my CM pac-nors (all on hunting rifles, mind you...).
