I have a donor mod. 70 classic(crf) action that was previously a .300 WM. My questions are, can I make this into a .404J without having to re-invent the wheel? If it is feasable, do I need a drop floorplate to be able to stuff three in it? And, with modern powders and brass, can I at least achieve traditional velocities with a 20 in. barrel? Thanks for any help or advice you can offer.

Starting with a 300 RUM, it is a nice of cake... its cubic dollars starting with a 300 WM.

DO NOT DO THIS

sell it off for a 300 rum and go from there.

Jeffe, I assume a 7 STW will work as well as the RUM?

OK, next question (not intending to hijack the thread, but in for a penny and all that...) will the STW make a suitable donor for either a 340 Weatherby or a 416 Remington?

Yes to both.

here's the story... if it will feed a rum, it will probably feed a 404, without much hassle, headache, heartache, or wallet ache...

oh yeah, a stw action is a good one for any of the other full length HH cases.. and a dem fine one at that.

for awhile, a model 70 in a rum was "cheap"... and a heck of a starting point.. have you gus SEEN gringo cazadors? it ammounts to a barrel swap and the standard m70 cleanups (williams extractor, slick up the action and trigger).. but generaly feeds like a hungrey coondog... billys LITERALLY feeds so smooth with your eyes closed you can't tell if you feed on or works over an empty mag.

trust me, you can make LOTS of $$$$$$mistakes$$$$ building a 404, but starting with a model70 RUM is not one

Just before Winchester announced it was closing I picked up a M-70 Classic Stainless in .300 RUM with the intention of using it as the basis for a .340 Wby. IIRC, I paid $525 out the door. Then I made the biggest mistake of my life by shooting it. The RUM had the annoying habit of putting 3 shots into one tiny little group, all touching. I can't bring myself to use it as a donor now, but don't really need a RUM, as I already have a M-70 Classic in .300 Weatherby that Hill Country Rifle did for me. So I put the RUM away for a while. Eventually I'll probably send it to Hill Country and have a pair of magnum .30s. So....I bought the STW as a replacement donor action and haven't dared to shoot it! lol

But I'm trying to come up with a use for the STW. Don't really need a .340, but there's an itch there that has needed scratching for some time. Don't really need the .416 either, have a Dakota in .375 H&H, will only get to Africa a few times in my life.

Life is good when we have such problems, no?

I am a living testament to the fact that starting with the wrong setup can cost you mega bucks when building a 404. I started with a Ruger M-77, Mark II RSM action in .375 H&H. Nothing wrong with the action, but getting it to feed from the magzine has been a nightmare. The original rifle cost me a little over two grand (counting the RSM), but now, that figure just passed the $4300 mark, AND IT STILL WILL NOT FEED FLAWLESSLY (and this is after Dennis Olson, recognized by many as the best smith in the country to correct feeding problems, had it for a year)!

I would think the .300 Win. Mag. would have the same problems as the H&H, as they are the same case.

I built mine on a donar M70 RUM that I bought NIB for $450 2 1/2 years ago. There was a bit of tinkering w/ the follower & rail smoothing to get it to be 100%, but pretty straight forward. I would save it for another project, like a nice .375h&h or trade it for a RUM.

Take that 7STW and make it into a 400 H&H Mag. That would be an easy conversion, and you'll have no feeding issuse. I also love my 416 Rem Mag. You could easily make that out of a 7mm STW donor.

Forget the 375 H&H Mag. Boring.

would either of you two be interested in a push-feed action to build on?

I ask because a local shop in Boise has a like-new, scroll engraved Rem 700 in 7mm RUM at a very nice price...asking $525. If you like the stock and barrel profile it is about $350-400 away from being a 404J with McGowan doing the work.

I am sure I have read it somewhere that building a .404J on a push feed action is a crime.

Your Winchester Model 70 in 300 Win. Mag will work just fine with minimum modification.

I built a very nice one starting with a new Model 70 (Classic) in 7mm Remington Mag.

You'll need to open the feedrails slightly, open the bolt face, and you'll need a 375 H&H length magazine box. The whole deal will cost you $100 at most.

By the way, when I built mine, I got the same advice...won't work...too much money...cartridges won't feed right, etc...

Turned out to be one of the best feeding rifles I ever owned. I changed the bottom metal (for esthetics, not function)...used Ted Blackburn's...but used a Winchester magazine box.

Did you have to change the follower? I have a model 70 stainless in 375 that appears to be too narrow in the magazine to feed well. I tried to use the follower from my pre 64 375h&h and found that the pre 64 magazine and follower is a good bit wider and wont fit.
