Would it be safe for a 1908 Brazillian Mauser (DWM-Berlin) of otherwise unknown ancestry

For a gun closet rifle: yes.
For a heavily used hunting rifle with thousands of shots to be fired through it: in my opinion rather NOT. Locking lug setback is expectable.

Carcano,
I think the third answer is...

if you load it high, you could damage the action, load it to within reason, and there's not reason it can't be shot round for round with it's original caliber.

Lug setback is a problem, but GENERALLY with either bolt thrust or the reloader.

I wouldn't run 10000 rounds of factory steyr through ANY mauser based 376.... then again I don't load anything as high as hornady loads the 270s gr factory load... i've never seen primers that flattened

Well, I certainly agree so far. As you are aware, the pressure of the factory .376 Steyr is even a wee bit lower than the 9,3x64, so you might argue that if people convert these old DWM actions to the large Brenneke round, it could also take the Steyr...

My point would of course be that the 9,3x64 itself is not the best choice either for these actions (unlike the 9,3x62). Smiler And people who opt for the .376 Steyr, usually *want* to handload it hotly, IMO.

Which has far less pressure, as you know :-)

Sounds circumspect and sound. Good luck with your project then !

Having built dozens of rifles on Mauser 98 actions and loaded as hot as possible, shooting many rounds and having never experienced bolt setback or any other side effect other than a smoother action I have to disagree. I also don't believe everyone who shoots the 376 is out for the last FPS with every round. And rare would it be the person that shoots "thousands" of big bore high pressure rounds.

In a mauser, I can't see the differnce between 338/06, a taylor or an 06 etc and a 376, its all the same to me. You jack um up......pressure is pressure.

Keep um right and it should not be a problem.
