What is the "softest" soft-point available in 500 grain range? Looking for something inexpensive that I can also load to speed (2,000+ fps) for hogs. Hornady seems to be the less expensive, but not sure if they are soft enough for piggies. The older Hornady soft point round nose. I've bought dozens of boxes at gun shows for 20-25$ per box. While I have shot buffalo with them in decades past I think now they are too soft. Great for plinking. Thanks. The 500 gr Interlocks? Trying to find some right now. Look good. "Evil is powerless if the good are unafraid" -- Ronald Reagan "Ignorance of The People gives strength to totalitarians." They all seem to work pretty well in the 2000+ range. In my experience the softest were the Woodleighs and Remingtons. But if you really want soft try some 400-405 gr 45-70 bullets. That rifle is awesome. Original Mauser or a custom? "Evil is powerless if the good are unafraid" -- Ronald Reagan "Ignorance of The People gives strength to totalitarians." If you can find them being what's going on in the ammo world these days----yes the Hornady's are the answer. I hammered a huge farm pig right between the eyes with that bullet @ 2100, range about 20'. It chewed a 3-4" hole all the way through & came out just in front of the left rear leg leaving a golf ball sized exit hole

With the .458, I think any 500gr. bullet would work well on hogs. Any of the early softs and the new Interbond. I have used the latter on buffalo, giraffe, and impala along with the solid on elephant. The .458 has enough diameter that I wouldn't mind shooting the solid on hogs.

Appears another good option would be Northfork Percussion Points, though not cheap, would expand really well on thin skinned game. What decade was the $20-25 per box for 458's? I've never seen anything under twice that in years! Maybe I need to have someone start shipping them here for that price DRSS Sabatti 450\400 NE Merkel 140-2 500 NE

Guys, This thread made me think about what I had in my bullet stash. I found a box of Hornady 458 cal. 500gr RN Encapsulated solids. Are they the ones that were real crap or as good as any RN solid? Mark, In my limited testing the encapsulated solids held together OK --- but quite a few folks with actual with them in Africa didn't have much good to say about them. Hunter: Over the past years. Now, too, at times. Many folks up here buy .458 and .460 to have the biggest rifle on the block and sell it when the kick is more than they can handle. They sell reloading stuff very cheap. I use the bullets in my .450 no2 double rifle and have enough to last my lifetime. For hunting I use Woodleigh but the Hornady are so cheap I plink and target with them. A mate in Montana finds me them, too, as big calibers are not popular there and so few want to buy them. cheers, Cal _______________________________ Cal Pappas, Willow, Alaska www.CalPappas.com www.CalPappas.blogspot.com 1994 Zimbabwe 1997 Zimbabwe 1998 Zimbabwe 1999 Zimbabwe 1999 Namibia, Botswana, Zambia--vacation 2000 Australia 2002 South Africa 2003 South Africa 2003 Zimbabwe 2005 South Africa 2005 Zimbabwe 2006 Tanzania 2006 Zimbabwe--vacation 2007 Zimbabwe--vacation 2008 Zimbabwe 2012 Australia 2013 South Africa 2013 Zimbabwe 2013 Australia 2016 Zimbabwe 2017 Zimbabwe 2018 South Africa 2018 Zimbabwe--vacation 2019 South Africa 2019 Botswana 2019 Zimbabwe vacation 2021 South Africa 2021 South Africa (2nd hunt a month later) ______________________________

Might try the Remington 405. Its very soft and will expand like crazy at 2000 fps. I would not push it much faster than that though.

If you don't mind tinkering then you can get a dead-soft .458" 500gr paper patched bullet to 2000fps and if you cast they're as cheap as your source of lead and a mould. While I know it's not the best test my 505gr 1850fps dead soft PP bullet mushrooms very well in water. I doubt any pig hit with one will go far.
