Just thought I would share. I just started loading for my 1895G & found a great load using the Rem.300grJHP over 53.5gr of IMR3031. It runs just under 1700fps & cuts nice round 1 1/4" groups @ 100yds w/ very little recoil. I neve thought this little Marlin would shoot that well.  LIFE IS NOT A SPECTATOR'S SPORT! | ||

Yep. When fitted with a scope my Guide Gun "Mjolnir" shoots several factory loads and a couple handloads well under 2 MOA. It really likes the 350 gr Hornady. Nice rifle, the Marlin 1895. | |||

I use those in my TC Contender but with a different load because my bbl is only 14 in. long. Fun to fire but the muzzle flash is something to see at dusk. Do it right the first time. | |||

Using the same bullets over 58gr of H335, each barrel of my SPR22 will print ~1" groups. I am convinced those Remington bullets are some of the best bargains still out there for reloaders. | |||

The Remington 300s are a bargain and very accurate in all my 458 caliber rifles. I bought another 500 recently and have been playing with them in my 458 B&M running around 2000-2100 fps. Quite accurate. The other bargain is the 405 Remingtons, extremely accurate. Have used them for years working up serious loads for all the 458s with 400 gr bullets and once there taking that data over to more expensive bullets like the Swifts and what have you. Fred: That bullet is indeed accurate out of the Marlins. But it can be frangible. I killed a small mule deer buck with that bullet about 12 years ago. He was crossing in front of me in low sage at about 45 yards on the run, and I hit him in the withers. He cartwheeled to a stop, of course, but I had to use a finisher. The bullet, handloaded to about 2100 out of my 1895, blew up on the top of the shoulder blade and pulverized the on side of a vertebra, but did not exit. At 1700 it is probably far more reliable. I have used the Rem. 300 grain in my orginal 1885 High Wall which I had rebarreled with results. As the barrel smooth out, it went from 1 1/4-1 1/2 to printing most @ 1 inch or better @ 100 yards. Shooting mostly lead in it now. Joe A. | |||

Cheap bullets -- 350, 400 gr. Speer SP. No need for JHP, they're alread "expanded." It's the bullet dia. and weight that does the work. Besides which, you want an SP for penetration. Hodgdon 4895 -- pretty much. 45/70 Govt. is the bottom end of "Big Bore" but effective for Elk and short distance shooting of big game in the woods. | |||

That 53.5 grains of IMR 3031 is a classic load, (Elmer Keith) but with the 405-grain bullet rather than the 300 grainer....... "Bitte, trinks du nicht das Wasser. Dahin haben die Kuhen gesheissen." | |||
